Chapter 2: The Trust That Could Not Be Broken

The Carter Family Office occupied the top four floors of a glass tower overlooking downtown Boston.
At nine o'clock Monday morning, the emergency board meeting began.
No reporters.
No assistants.
Only lawyers.
Trust administrators.
And Adrian's seventy-eight-year-old grandfather...
Charles Carter.
The man who had built the Carter fortune from a single construction company into one of New England's largest investment groups.
Charles sat silently while attorneys distributed updated legal opinions.
Finally he looked at Adrian.
"Did you know?"
Adrian swallowed.
"No."
Charles turned another page.
"You signed this yourself."
"I trusted my attorneys."
Charles's expression hardened.
"No."
His voice became colder.
"You trusted your arrogance."
The lead attorney cleared his throat.
"Mr. Carter, under Massachusetts law and the trust agreement, Baby Grace Carter qualifies immediately as a primary bloodline beneficiary."
Another director added,
"She cannot be removed without unanimous consent of every trustee."
Charles slowly folded his hands.
"Which she will never receive."
Vanessa finally exploded.
"This is insane!"
Everyone turned.
She stood abruptly.
"So this woman traps him with a baby and suddenly owns everything?"
"No," Charles answered.
"My granddaughter owns nothing."
He paused.
"My great-granddaughter owns protection."
Silence.
Charles looked toward Adrian.
"You embarrassed your wife."
"You abandoned your family."
"You nearly destroyed your own daughter before she was born."
His walking cane struck the marble floor once.
Loud.
Sharp.
"The only person trapped here..."
May you like
He looked directly into Adrian's eyes.
"...is you."
