Chapter 3: A Family's Greatest Betrayal
Agent Rebecca Lawson approached the witness stand.
"We apologize for interrupting these proceedings."
She turned toward the judge.
"Our investigation has uncovered evidence connected to military fraud."
Elaine looked confused.
"Fraud?"
Agent Lawson nodded.
"Not by Captain Smith."
She faced Curtis.
"By you."
The courtroom exploded.
Curtis stood.
"That's insane."
The agent placed several documents onto the projector.
Military disability payments.
Insurance claims.
Forged signatures.
Withdrawals.
Every payment had been deposited into accounts controlled by Curtis over the previous four years.
General Walker closed his eyes.
"I was afraid this might be true."
Evelyn looked stunned.
"Curtis..."
He couldn't meet her eyes.
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this."
Agent Lawson continued.
"Captain Smith authorized temporary access to her financial affairs while she underwent reconstructive surgeries."
She paused.
"That authorization was never revoked because someone repeatedly forged renewal forms."
The signatures looked convincing.
Until forensic experts examined them.
The judge asked quietly,
"Who benefited financially?"
Agent Lawson answered with one sentence.
"Mr. Curtis Carter received more than eight hundred thousand dollars."
Elaine slowly turned toward her son.
"No..."
Curtis shook his head desperately.
"I was going to pay it back."
"When?"
No answer.
Evelyn's voice barely rose above a whisper.
"I trusted you."
Curtis finally broke.
"I thought you were never coming home."
"I thought nobody would ever check."
Federal agents stepped forward.
Curtis instinctively backed toward the courtroom doors.
Before he could reach them—
Two agents blocked his path.
"Mr. Carter."
"You are being detained pending charges of fraud, identity theft, and theft of federal military benefits."
Handcuffs clicked shut.
Elaine screamed.
"My son is innocent!"
Agent Lawson quietly replied,
"Mrs. Carter..."
"The evidence says otherwise."
As Curtis was led away, he looked back at Evelyn.
"I'm sorry."
She didn't answer.
She simply watched him disappear through the courtroom doors.
