Chapter 2: The Truth Behind the Scars

General Walker displayed another photograph.
It wasn't heroic.
It was heartbreaking.
A military hospital.
Evelyn lay unconscious beneath layers of bandages.
Burns covered almost half her body.
Several surgeries were listed beneath the image.
The courtroom remained frozen.
"Captain Smith was offered immediate evacuation," Walker explained.
"She refused."
He clicked another image.
Security footage from a military convoy appeared.
An armored vehicle exploded.
Smoke swallowed everything.
Then, through the flames, Evelyn climbed back inside the burning transport.
Not once.
Twice.
Three times.
Each trip brought another wounded soldier out alive.
"The final soldier," Walker said quietly, "was trapped beneath collapsing steel."
Everyone watched the grainy footage.
A blast knocked Evelyn backward.
She disappeared into smoke.
Several soldiers believed she had died.
Then she emerged carrying the unconscious corporal across her shoulders.
Seconds later the vehicle exploded completely.
The courtroom erupted into whispers.
General Walker folded his hands.
"The burns she carries today came from that rescue."
He looked directly at Elaine.
"So no, Mrs. Carter."
"They are not fake."
"They are the price of twenty-three lives."
Elaine suddenly looked at Evelyn's scarred hands.
For years she had mocked them.
Called them ugly.
Told relatives Evelyn wore makeup to create sympathy.
Now the truth sat before the entire courtroom.
Judge Whitmore spoke carefully.
"Mrs. Carter..."
"Did you ever ask your daughter how she received these injuries?"
Elaine couldn't answer.
Instead she looked away.
Curtis slowly turned toward Evelyn.
"You told Mom it happened overseas."
"I did."
"And she said..."
Evelyn smiled sadly.
"She said I probably burned myself cooking."
No one laughed.
The silence became heavier than words.
Then another person entered the courtroom.
Two federal investigators.
Both wearing dark suits.
They handed the judge another envelope.
Judge Whitmore read it.
His face immediately hardened.
He looked toward Curtis.
"Mr. Carter."
"I need you to remain where you are."
Curtis frowned.
May you like
"What?"
Before anyone explained, federal agents quietly stepped toward every courtroom exit.
