Chapter 5: The Last Pearl

Six months later...

Spring sunlight poured through the same grand foyer.

The marble staircase had been restored.

The broken pearls were gone.

The little girl sat on the steps quietly drawing with colored pencils.

The elderly woman, now walking slowly with a cane, smiled as she watched her.

Emily was no longer the maid.

She had become the family's estate manager after refusing to lie to protect anyone.

The husband walked over and handed his mother a small velvet box.

Inside rested the repaired pearl necklace.

Every pearl had been restrung.

Except one.

One pearl was missing forever.

His mother smiled softly.

"Leave it that way."

He looked at her.

"Why?"

She fastened the necklace around her neck.

"So we remember."

"Remember what?"

She glanced toward Lily, laughing in the sunlight.

"That families aren't saved by perfect people."

"They're saved by the one person brave enough to tell the truth."

The husband looked at his daughter.

She smiled back without fear.

For the first time since that terrible night...

The mansion no longer felt haunted.

The missing pearl would always remind them of betrayal.

But the family had learned something even more valuable.
