Chapter 1: The Child Who Couldn't Stay Silent

Vivian never answered.

Her lips trembled, but no words came.

The foyer remained so quiet that the last pearl rolling across the marble floor sounded impossibly loud before stopping beside the unconscious elderly woman.

The husband slowly walked toward the staircase.

Each step echoed through the mansion.

His eyes never left Vivian.

"What happened?"

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Vivian swallowed hard.

"She... she slipped."

The little girl suddenly pulled the maid's trembling hand away from her mouth.

"No."

Every adult froze.

The child pointed toward Vivian again.

"I saw Aunt Vivian push Grandma."

The maid's face turned ghostly white.

"I'm sorry, sir..." she whispered. "I tried to stop her..."

Vivian's eyes widened.

"Emily!" she snapped at the maid.

But Emily dropped to her knees beside the elderly woman instead.

"I'm calling an ambulance."

"No!" Vivian shouted.

Everyone looked at her.

She immediately realized her mistake.

"I mean... we should check on her first."

The husband stared at his wife.

For ten years he had believed he knew every expression on Vivian's face.
