Chapter 6 - The Estate Behind the Gates

The Sterling estate was empty when police arrived.

The ballroom still held flowers from Preston’s engagement gala.

Champagne remained in crystal glasses.

Plates of untouched food lined the tables.

The guests had been dismissed shortly after Chloe escaped.

Eleanor had told them her daughter-in-law suffered a mental health crisis.

Many believed her.

Belief came easily when wealth provided the vocabulary.

Chloe’s phone was found inside the pool house.

The screen had been smashed.

Its memory remained intact.

The final video showed Julian blocking the door.

His voice was clear.

“You are going to sign the proxy.”

Chloe answered from behind the camera.

“No.”

“You do not understand what happens if the audit reaches federal investigators.”

“I understand exactly what happens.”

“People go to prison.”

Preston entered the frame.

“Give me the phone.”

The image spun.

A struggle followed.

Eleanor’s voice came from outside the room.

“Do not mark her face.”

The video ended.

Dr. Chen had already documented the mark across Chloe’s face.

The order had failed.

The pool house contained more evidence.

A broken syringe.

Fragments of Chloe’s dress.

A leather restraint strap.

Blood near the rear door.

Investigators also found a concealed cabinet beneath the wet bar.

Inside were passports, cash, and prepaid phones.

One phone contained messages between Julian and Dr. Mercer.

The colonel is the greater risk.

If Hayes interferes, release the Camp Pendleton file.

Mercer replied.

Is the file real?

Julian answered.

Real enough after editing.

Major Brooks read the exchange.

“They fabricated military records.”

Sloan opened another thread.

Preston had sent photographs of me entering secure buildings at Camp Pendleton.

Some were taken from public roads.

Others appeared to come from internal surveillance systems.

A Sterling Aeronautics employee had access to a contractor office on base.

Someone had used that access to monitor me.

The plan was simple.

If I defended Chloe publicly, they would leak altered records suggesting I manipulated military contracts to benefit rivals of Sterling Aeronautics.

My career would become the distraction.

Chloe watched the evidence review from a protected hospital room.

“I almost signed,” she whispered.

I sat beside her.

“When?”

“In the pool house.”

“Julian said they would accuse you of treason.”

“He showed me photographs of you meeting an inspector.”

“The inspector was evaluating maintenance failures.”

“I know that now.”

She pressed her palms against her eyes.

“I thought I could protect you.”

I understood the impulse.

It was the same mistake military leaders made when they hid failures to protect units.

Silence rarely protected the innocent.

It protected the person creating the danger.

Captain Ortega entered with new information.

The Sterlings’ private jet had filed a flight plan for Mexico.

It never took off.

Airport cameras showed Eleanor, Julian, and Preston arriving separately.

They entered a hangar.

No one saw them leave.

A tunnel beneath the hangar connected to an adjacent warehouse.

The warehouse belonged to Sterling Aeronautics.

Federal agents searched it.

They found empty offices, shredders still warm, and crates marked for export.

One crate contained actuator assemblies matching the falsified reports.

Another contained Chloe’s missing laptop.

A third held military access badges issued to deceased contractors.

Major Brooks stared at the badges.

“This is bigger than contract fraud.”

“They have been using dead identities to enter secure facilities.”

Inside the final crate was a photograph of me and Chloe taken through the window of her hospital room.

Someone had written across it in red ink.

THE COLONEL WILL CHOOSE HER CAREER.
