Chapter 16 - The Exchange

The location was an abandoned private club outside Greenwich.

It had once belonged to Sterling Holdings.

That alone told Adrian the choice was deliberate.

Vanessa wanted control of the environment.

Clara arrived carrying Charles’s wooden box.

No visible security.

No police cars.

Exactly as instructed.

But Daniel’s team surrounded the property from half a mile away.

Adrian wore an earpiece.

So did Clara.

She entered alone.

Vanessa stood beneath a broken chandelier.

No evening gown now.

Black trousers.

White blouse.

Hair pulled back.

She looked less like a socialite.

More like her father.

Calvin stood near Marianne.

Clara’s mother was tied to a chair but appeared unhurt.

Clara’s eyes filled.

“Mom.”

Marianne shook her head.

“Don’t give them anything.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Still brave after all these years.”

Clara looked at her.

“You know my mother.”

“Unfortunately.”

Marianne glared.

“You were a child when this started.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“And your generation left mine to clean it up.”

Clara frowned.

“By hurting people?”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You think this is about greed?”

“You tried to steal Evelyn’s trust.”

“I tried to save my father.”

“From prison?”

“From Charles Beaumont’s lie.”

Vanessa pointed toward the box.

“Your mother and Charles created a narrative where Victor carried everything.”

Marianne shouted.

“Because he ordered the trial to continue after patients became sick.”

Vanessa turned.

“And Charles signed the paperwork.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did he get to die respected?”

Marianne had no answer.

Vanessa looked at Clara.

“My father spent thirty years knowing that if the truth came out, the world would call him a murderer while Beaumont became the remorseful billionaire who made a mistake.”

Clara held the box tighter.

“So you decided to become worse than the story.”

Vanessa’s eyes sharpened.

“I decided my family would not be sacrificed alone.”

“You pushed Rachel Cole.”

Calvin looked away.

Vanessa remained still.

“You pushed Evelyn.”

No answer.

“You planted jewelry.”

Silence.

“You kidnapped my mother.”

Vanessa’s voice lowered.

“And you grabbed my wrist.”

Clara almost smiled.

“There it is.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“That single stupid decision destroyed everything.”

“No.”

Clara shook her head.

“It exposed everything.”

Vanessa’s face twisted.

She reached for the box.

Clara pulled it back.

“My mother first.”

“Box first.”

“No.”

Calvin moved.

Clara opened the lid.

“Take one more step and I throw the drive into the fireplace.”

There was no fire.

But Vanessa did not know whether Clara was bluffing about another hiding place.

She stopped.

“Release her.”

Calvin hesitated.

Vanessa nodded.

He cut the rope around Marianne’s wrists.

Marianne stood.

“Walk toward me, Mom.”

She did.

Halfway across the room, Calvin suddenly grabbed her again.

Vanessa laughed.

“You really thought it would be that easy?”

Clara’s stomach dropped.

Vanessa took the box.

Then she opened it.

The flash drive was inside.

She smiled.

“Goodbye, Clara.”

A voice came from the darkness.

“No.”

Adrian stepped into the room.

Vanessa froze.

Security emerged from three entrances.

Calvin pulled Marianne closer.

Daniel aimed his weapon downward but ready.

“Let her go.”

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

“You never could stay away.”

Adrian’s expression was calm.

“You told Clara the truth.”

Vanessa frowned.

“What truth?”

“That this was never about protecting your father.”

He touched his earpiece.

“Investigators heard everything.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Clara smiled.

The button on her coat had been a microphone.

Vanessa looked at Clara.

“You little—”

She lunged.

Not toward Clara.

Toward Marianne.

Clara moved first.

She stepped between them.

Vanessa raised her hand.

Again.

For the second time, Clara caught her wrist in mid-air.

The same position.

The same furious eyes.

But this time Clara was not wearing a maid uniform.

And this time Vanessa knew exactly who was standing behind her.

Adrian spoke quietly.

“It’s over.”

Vanessa looked at him.

Then at Clara.

Then at her own captured wrist.

Her body seemed to collapse without falling.

Clara released her.

Daniel moved in.

Handcuffs clicked around Vanessa Sterling’s wrists.

But before officers led her away, Vanessa smiled at Adrian.

“You still don’t understand.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“My father never ordered the fire.”

Vanessa looked toward Calvin.

Calvin suddenly went pale.

Vanessa continued.

“He did.”

Everyone turned.

Calvin shoved Marianne aside and ran.

May you like

And in his pocket was the only remaining key to Victor Sterling’s private archive.
