Chapter 11 - The Witness

Adrian was through the diner door within seconds.
Security rushed toward the highway.
Samuel remained on the floor.
Clara crawled toward him.
“You’re bleeding.”
“Glass.”
A cut ran across his forehead.
Nothing worse.
Adrian grabbed Clara’s shoulders.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
He looked furious.
Not at her.
At himself.
“I never should have let you come in alone.”
“You didn’t fire the shot.”
“No.”
“But I brought you into this.”
Clara shook her head.
“I stepped into it when I caught Vanessa’s wrist.”
Samuel laughed weakly from the floor.
“That wrist is turning into an expensive decision.”
Police arrived.
No shooter was found.
But security recovered a stolen car abandoned half a mile away.
Inside was a burner phone.
One outgoing call had been made.
To a Sterling Health corporate number.
That was enough for Adrian.
He stopped treating the situation like a family scandal.
By noon, his attorneys had filed emergency motions preventing Victor Sterling or any Sterling-controlled entity from exercising authority over Beaumont Foundation assets.
He suspended Vanessa from all Beaumont events.
He removed every staff member she had hired.
And he called a special board meeting for the next morning.
Vanessa responded publicly.
Her statement appeared online within an hour.
ADRIAN BEAUMONT MANIPULATED BY TEMPORARY EMPLOYEE DURING FAMILY MEDICAL CRISIS.
Clara stared at the headline.
Her photograph was underneath.
Someone had found a picture from her old community college profile.
The article called her financially unstable.
It mentioned her mother’s debt.
Her eviction notice from two years earlier.
Her brother’s juvenile arrest.
Every vulnerable piece of her life had been turned into evidence that she was dishonest.
Evelyn found Clara sitting alone in the palace kitchen.
“You’re crying.”
Clara wiped her face.
“I’m angry.”
“Good.”
Clara laughed despite herself.
“Good?”
“Tears from sadness make you tired.”
Evelyn rolled closer.
“Tears from anger make you dangerous.”
Clara looked at the article.
“They’re destroying my name.”
“No.”
“They’re trying.”
“That’s different.”
Clara stared at her.
Evelyn touched her hand.
“Vanessa thought your job was your weakness.”
“Victor thinks your past is your weakness.”
“They both made the same mistake.”
“What?”
“They think dignity belongs to people with money.”
Clara looked away.
“I could lose my apartment.”
“I can help.”
“No.”
Evelyn paused.
Clara continued.
“If you give me money now, they’ll say I did all of this to get it.”
A smile slowly appeared on Evelyn’s face.
“Exactly.”
Clara frowned.
“You’re pleased?”
“I’m impressed.”
The kitchen door opened.
Adrian entered.
He looked tired.
“Samuel gave investigators the recordings.”
Clara stood.
“And?”
“They’re opening a criminal inquiry into Rachel Cole’s death.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Adrian continued.
“And my mother’s fall.”
Clara exhaled.
“So Vanessa is finished.”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
He placed a document on the table.
“She just filed a petition claiming my mother is mentally incompetent.”
Evelyn’s face hardened.
Clara looked at the papers.
“If the court agrees?”
“Her financial decisions can be challenged.”
Adrian nodded.
“And until the issue is resolved, her trust votes may be frozen.”
Clara understood.
Victor did not need Evelyn’s signature anymore.
He only needed to stop her from voting.
Adrian turned another page.
“The petition includes affidavits from two doctors.”
Evelyn stared.
“My doctors?”
“One former physician.”
“And another specialist Vanessa hired.”
Clara felt cold.
The accusations were detailed.
Memory loss.
Paranoia.
Aggression.
Confusion.
Every symptom Vanessa had spent months teaching others to expect.
Adrian looked at his mother.
“She built this before last night.”
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
Clara looked again at the petition.
Then noticed a name at the bottom.
The attorney who had filed it.
Thomas Vale.
Adrian’s face darkened.
“That can’t be right.”
“Who is he?”
Adrian stared at the signature.
“My family attorney.”
Evelyn whispered.
“For thirty-one years.”
Victor Sterling had not merely planted people around the Beaumont family.
He had planted someone inside their most trusted circle.
May you like
And that meant the enemy had been sitting beside them long before Vanessa ever raised her hand.
