Chapter 8 – The Hearing

Nine days later, the courthouse steps were lined with reporters before sunrise.

Satellite trucks filled the streets.

Camera crews jostled for position.

Everyone wanted the same image.

Damien Rhodes.

The billionaire who had spent years controlling headlines was about to stand before a judge who couldn't be bought with donations or influence.

Emma arrived through a private entrance.

She moved carefully, one hand resting on her eight-month pregnant belly.

Her doctor had opposed the trip, but Emma insisted.

"I've hidden long enough," she had said.

Inside the courtroom, Ethan helped her into a seat.

"You don't have to prove you're strong," he whispered.

Emma offered a faint smile.

"I'm not here to prove anything."

"I'm here to tell the truth."

Damien entered minutes later with a team of attorneys.

His tailored suit was flawless.

His expression wasn't.

For the first time since founding Rhodes Global, he looked like a man who had slept very little.

Across the aisle, his eyes met Emma's.

He expected anger.

Instead, he found calm.

That frightened him more.

Judge Rebecca Lawson took the bench.

"This hearing concerns requests for a protective order, temporary custody, financial relief, and preservation of evidence."

She looked toward Damien.

"Mr. Rhodes, your counsel may proceed."

His lead attorney argued that Emma had exaggerated events to gain leverage in a divorce.

He described the gala as "an unfortunate misunderstanding."

Then Ethan stood.

"Your Honor, the petitioner requests permission to play Exhibit Twelve."

The courtroom lights dimmed.

The security footage appeared on the monitors.

Every second.

Every angle.

No edits.

No narration.

Only the truth.

Silence filled the room.

When the video ended, Judge Lawson removed her glasses.

"Mr. Rhodes..."

She paused.

"Is there any reasonable explanation for what this court has just witnessed?"

Damien's attorney rose quickly.

"Your Honor, the footage lacks context—"

"It shows more than enough context."

The judge's voice was firm.

She turned toward Emma.

"Mrs. Rhodes, are you afraid of your husband?"

Emma answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

The single word echoed through the courtroom.

Judge Lawson nodded slowly before reading her decision.

"The court grants an immediate protective order."

"Mr. Rhodes is prohibited from contacting Mrs. Rhodes except through counsel."

"Temporary control of jointly owned residential property is awarded to Mrs. Rhodes."

"Financial assets subject to marital distribution are frozen pending further proceedings."

A murmur spread through the gallery.

Damien remained motionless.

The judge wasn't finished.

"I am also referring the allegations of witness tampering to the appropriate authorities."

The gavel struck once.

"Hearing adjourned."

As everyone began to leave, Damien spoke quietly.

"Emma."

She stopped but didn't turn around.

"I'm sorry."

She closed her eyes.

Months earlier, those words would have meant everything.

Now...

"They're for you," she said softly.

"Not for me."

Without another glance, she walked out of the courtroom with Ethan beside her.

Behind them, Damien realized that for the first time in his life...

No amount of money could buy back the person he had lost.
