Chapter 2 – The Fall They Couldn't Hide

Emma stood frozen beneath the grand entrance as hundreds of guests watched in silence.

The rain outside intensified, drumming against the glass walls of the hotel like a warning no one wanted to hear.

For several long seconds, Damien said nothing.

Neither did she.

Then Celeste broke the silence.

"Security," she called lightly, as if ordering another glass of champagne. "Mrs. Rhodes seems confused."

Two security guards approached.

They recognized Emma immediately.

For years, she had organized the Rhodes Foundation's children's hospitals and scholarship programs. She had shaken hands with senators, governors, and donors beside Damien at events just like this one.

Now neither guard knew where to look.

"Ma'am..." one began carefully.

Emma never took her eyes off her husband.

"Tell them."

Damien adjusted the cuff of his tuxedo.

"Escort her outside."

The words were calm.

Almost bored.

Emma felt something inside her finally crack.

"I built your foundation with you," she whispered.

"You hosted charity dinners," Damien replied. "Don't confuse appearances with ownership."

The sentence drew quiet murmurs from nearby guests.

Someone started livestreaming.

Emma noticed dozens of phones pointed toward them.

Not one person stepped forward.

Celeste smiled sweetly.

"You should leave before you embarrass yourself."

Emma turned toward her.

"You knew he was married."

"I knew he was unhappy."

The answer hit almost as hard as Damien's betrayal.

Emma took one slow step backward.

Another sharp pain tightened across her abdomen.

She instinctively wrapped both arms around her stomach.

The baby kicked again.

Harder this time.

A nearby waitress noticed Emma's face turn pale.

"Ma'am, are you all right?"

Before Emma could answer, dizziness blurred her vision.

The marble floor seemed to tilt beneath her feet.

She reached for the nearest table.

Her fingers slipped across polished glass.

The champagne tower beside her wobbled.

Then collapsed.

Crystal exploded across the ballroom.

Guests screamed.

Emma lost her balance.

She fell heavily onto one knee before collapsing completely.

A gasp swept through the room.

Dark red blood slowly spread across the pale fabric of her gown.

The waitress dropped beside her immediately.

"Call an ambulance!"

Emma could barely breathe.

"My baby..." she whispered.

"My baby..."

For the first time that evening, panic crossed Damien's face.

He took one instinctive step toward her—

—but stopped.

Celeste caught his arm.

"Don't," she whispered urgently.

"The cameras."

Damien looked around.

Every phone in the ballroom was recording.

Every guest had witnessed the moment.

The billionaire who had ordered his pregnant wife thrown out now stood motionless while she bled on the floor.

Across the room, an elderly man quietly lowered his wine glass.

Judge Arthur Whitmore.

Retired Chief Justice of New York.

He looked directly at Damien and said just loudly enough for those nearby to hear,

"Young man... there are mistakes money can fix."

He paused.

May you like

"And then there are the ones a jury never forgets."

The ballroom fell completely silent.
