Chapter 4: Twelve Months Later

One year later, the Harrington Children's Foundation opened its newest rehabilitation center outside Boston.
Reporters filled the lobby.
Photographers crowded around Nathan.
But he wasn't there to celebrate another business success.
He stood quietly beside three children cutting a blue ribbon.
Emma smiled without fear.
Ethan laughed as his youngest sister chased balloons across the polished floor.
For the first time in years...
They looked like ordinary children.
Across town, Victoria sat inside a state correctional facility beginning the second year of a lengthy prison sentence after pleading guilty to multiple counts of child abuse, unlawful imprisonment, and aggravated assault.
Every charity had erased her name.
Every magazine removed her from its covers.
Every award she'd once displayed now belonged in evidence lockers.
Nathan never visited.
He didn't need revenge.
Justice had already arrived.
Later that afternoon, James joined the children in the mansion's backyard.
The basement had been demolished months earlier.
In its place stood a bright glass sunroom filled with books, toys, and music.
No locks.
No darkness.
Only sunlight.
Nathan watched his children through the windows as laughter echoed across the garden.
Emma ran into his arms.
"Daddy?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Can we leave the basement behind forever?"
Nathan kissed the top of her head.
"We already have."
He looked toward the afternoon sun stretching across the estate.
Some families survive because they keep their secrets.
Others survive because someone finally uncovers them.
Nathan had returned home expecting a peaceful reunion after fourteen exhausting hours in the air.
Instead, he discovered the darkest truth hidden beneath his own house.
And by opening one locked basement door...

He gave his children something no amount of wealth could ever buy again.
A future without fear.
