Chapter 3: The Empire Begins to Crack

By noon, the Harrington mansion looked nothing like the glamorous estate featured in magazines.

Police cruisers lined the circular driveway.

Child welfare investigators interviewed staff one by one.

Forensic photographers documented the basement.

Victoria sat in the formal drawing room surrounded by attorneys.

She still wore the same elegant ivory blouse from the previous evening.

Only now it was wrinkled.

Her perfect hair had begun falling loose.

"This is ridiculous," she insisted.

"My husband is overreacting."

One detective quietly placed several printed photographs on the coffee table.

Bruises.

Medical reports.

Images taken from hidden cameras.

Victoria's confidence wavered.

"My children bruise easily."

Another investigator placed a flash drive beside the photographs.

"This contains eleven months of video."

Her attorney stopped speaking.

Nathan entered without warning.

Every person in the room stood.

Except Victoria.

She searched his face for hesitation.

Mercy.

Love.

She found none.

"I can explain," she whispered.

Nathan laid a thick folder in front of her.

"What is this?"

"Divorce papers."

Her face drained of color.

"You can't destroy this family."

Nathan's reply was immediate.

"You destroyed it."

"You only hid the damage."

She reached for his hand.

He stepped back.

"The children asked me something today."

Victoria stared silently.

"They asked if they're allowed to sleep upstairs tonight."

His voice almost broke.

"They thought basements were where children belonged."

The room became unbearably quiet.

Nathan looked toward the detectives.

"I'm ready to make my official statement."

Victoria finally understood.

This wasn't an argument.

It was the end.
