Chapter 1: The Stand

The wrought-iron gates crashed shut with a thunderous metallic boom that echoed across the estate.

Every conversation died instantly.

Guests turned in unison toward the entrance as two imposing security guards stepped from behind the perfectly trimmed hedges, sealing off the only exit.

Vivian had already reached the bottom of the staircase.

She froze.

Slowly, she turned around, the emerald silk of her designer dress whipping sharply in the afternoon breeze.

"What is the meaning of this?" she demanded, her voice slicing through the silence.

No one answered.

At the center of the marble courtyard, Clara remained on her knees, clutching the little girl beneath the blue blanket. Her entire body still trembled from what had almost happened.

Julian never looked at Vivian.

Instead, he bent down and rested one steady hand on Clara's shaking shoulder.

A silent thank you.

Then...

The impossible happened.

Julian placed both polished brown shoes firmly against the white marble floor.

The crowd instinctively leaned forward.

One heartbeat.

Two.

Then, with calm precision, he pushed himself out of the wheelchair.

Gasps exploded across the courtyard.

Several women covered their mouths.

A board member nearly dropped his wine glass.

One elderly guest whispered,

"...Dear God."

Julian stood.

Straight.

Strong.

Completely steady.

He brushed an invisible wrinkle from his tailored tan jacket before lifting his chin.

The empty wheelchair sat behind him like the corpse of an old lie.

Vivian's face emptied of color.

The champagne flute slipped from her fingers.

It shattered across the marble.

"No..."

Her lips trembled.

"...You're paralyzed."

Julian met her terrified stare without the slightest trace of emotion.

"I was."

His deep voice rolled across the courtyard.

"Until I wasn't."

Silence swallowed the estate.

For the first time since anyone had known Julian Ashford...

The hunter was no longer pretending to be the prey.
