PART 2: THE SON WHO STOPPED LISTENING

The silence after my words didn’t last long.
My mother laughed first.
A short, sharp laugh—like she still believed I was the same obedient son who never raised his voice.
“You’re going to defend her?” she asked.
Her grip on Anna’s hair didn’t loosen.
That was the moment something inside me broke completely.
I stepped forward again.
Slower this time.
Controlled.
Dangerously calm.
“I said,” I repeated, “let her go.”
My mother finally released Anna—but only to shove her slightly toward the sink again.
“Or what?” she challenged.
Anna’s body was shaking now. Not from cold water anymore—but fear.
My voice dropped lower.
“You don’t touch her again.”
My mother tilted her head.
And smiled.
That smile was worse than the slap.
Because it meant she still thought she had power over me.
“She’s ruining this family,” she said. “And you’re too blind to see it.”
I looked at Anna.
Her hands were red.
Her belly moved slightly as the baby shifted inside her.
She didn’t speak.
She didn’t need to.
That silence told me everything.
I exhaled once.
Then I said the words that changed the entire house:
“Mom… get out of this kitchen.”
Her expression froze.
For the first time, she looked at me like she didn’t recognize me at all.
“Excuse me?”
“I’m not asking anymore.”
The air tightened.
Even the clock on the wall felt louder.
May you like
And then I did something she never expected.
I stepped between her and Anna.
