CHAPTER 3 — “The Half-Truth Collapse”

By afternoon, lawyers arrived.

Not just one side anymore.

Both.

The school was now a battlefield disguised as an office.

Damian’s father demanded “context.”

My attorney demanded “accountability.”

Officer Caldwell stood between them like a man realizing he had walked into the wrong story too late.

But the final piece came unexpectedly.

Tommy’s mother arrived.

She had not been at the school earlier.

She was shaking.

Holding a small voice recorder.

“I didn’t know where else to go,” she said.

She pressed play.

A child’s voice filled the room.

Tommy.

“Damian said if I told anyone, he’d do worse tomorrow.”

Silence.

“The girl tried to stop him. She told me to run.”

Another pause.

“She stayed.”

Lily didn’t look at anyone while the recording played.

She only asked one question.

Quiet.

Simple.

“Is he going to be okay?”

Not Damian.

Not herself.

Tommy.

That was when Damian finally spoke.

For the first time.

“I didn’t mean to—”

His voice cracked.

“I didn’t think anyone would care.”

That was the real confession.

Not violence.

Not innocence.

May you like

But expectation.

That no one would stop him.
