CHAPTER 1 — “The Whisper That Changed Everything”
The room stayed silent after Lily asked her question.
“Is Tommy okay?”
Officer Caldwell shifted his stance. Just a small movement, but it changed everything. Like something inside him had quietly broken alignment.
The nurse tightened her grip on the clipboard.
My throat felt dry.
“Why are you asking that?” I asked gently.
Lily lowered her eyes to her bandaged hand.
Because I was scared she would say something like I’m sorry.
But she didn’t.
Instead, she whispered:
“Because I couldn’t stop them all.”
The sentence didn’t make sense.
Not yet.
Officer Caldwell stepped closer. His voice dropped.
“Sir… we need to review security footage. Now.”
That was the first time I noticed something unusual.
No one in the room disagreed.
Not the principal.
Not the nurse.
Not even Damian’s parents anymore.
