Chapter 5 - THE FAMILY ARRIVES

Eleanor arrived first.
She wore pearl earrings and a cream cashmere coat I had bought her for Christmas.
Owen followed in a new sports car financed partly through money taken from our joint account.
They entered the foyer smiling.
Eleanor saw the officers near the library.
Her smile vanished.
“What is happening?”
“An anniversary celebration.”
“Why are police here?”
“Some gifts require witnesses.”
Owen looked toward Rebecca and Priya.
Then he saw the financial folders on the dining table.
His face changed.
“Where’s Marcus?”
“Downstairs.”
Eleanor took one step toward the cellar.
I blocked her.
“Not yet.”
“You cannot keep me from my son.”
“I can keep everyone in this room until the presentation begins.”
“You sound insane.”
Rebecca spoke from behind me.
“Mrs. Vance, Clara is asking you to wait voluntarily.”
“You are free to leave.”
Eleanor did not leave.
People rarely walk away when they believe a secret may be exposed without them.
My parents arrived next.
Then Leonard.
Marcus’s board chair, Daniel Ross, entered with the company’s general counsel.
The foyer filled with people who had benefited from Marcus’s polished image.
At seven-twelve, I led them downstairs.
The tasting area outside the cellar had been arranged like a formal anniversary dinner.
Candles.
White roses.
Crystal glasses.
The cake in the center.
Eleanor stared at the blocked steel door.
“What have you done?”
I removed the iron bar.
Then I looked toward the camera mounted above the entrance.
Priya had connected the recording to the television in the tasting room.
Every person could see the last three hours.
Marcus and Chloe kissing.
The bracelet.
The discussion about taking my house.
Marcus calling my bakeries a hobby that became useful.
Chloe mocking the clothes I wore after sixteen-hour workdays.
Then Eleanor’s voice appeared in an earlier saved recording.
You must be patient.
Clara gave Marcus the life.
You need to make him believe you are the peace.
The room became silent.
Eleanor turned toward me.
“You recorded private conversations?”
“Chloe used my household server.”
“The backup belongs to the estate network.”
“That is illegal.”
Daniel’s general counsel answered.
“The legality can be reviewed.”
“The corporate transfers are more immediate.”
I opened the cellar door.
Marcus stood behind it.
His face was red with fury.
Chloe remained near the tasting table, crying.
Marcus stepped out.
Then he saw his family.
His employer.
The police.
My parents.
His expression collapsed.
“Clara.”
I lifted the cake box.
“Happy tenth anniversary.”
Eleanor rushed toward him.
“Are you all right?”
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew she was doing this?”
Her question was not about the affair.
It was about my presentation.
She still believed exposure was the offense.
Leonard looked at his son.
“How long?”
Marcus said nothing.
Chloe attempted to slip past the officers.
One of them stopped her.
“Ms. Mercer?”
She froze.
I watched Marcus realize I knew her real name.
He looked toward Chloe.
Then toward Eleanor.
The alliance began cracking.
Daniel Ross opened a financial folder.
“Marcus, why did Vance Strategic Advisory receive six million dollars from accounts connected to Clara’s businesses?”
Marcus straightened.
“That is a legitimate consultancy.”
“Where are the contracts?”
“Owen manages the records.”
Owen looked at him.
“You said Clara approved everything.”
I placed the forged authorization on the table.
“My signature was copied.”
Eleanor turned toward Marcus.
“You told me she would never discover the transfers.”
May you like
Every face in the room moved toward her.
She had confessed before anyone asked a question.
