Chapter 18 - CHLOE’S LETTER
Chloe received five years under her cooperation agreement.
She wrote to me once from prison.
I almost returned the envelope unopened.
Then I read it inside Rebecca’s office.
Clara,
I used to tell myself you had everything.
That belief made taking from you feel less cruel.
You had money, talent, a husband, and a home.
I thought losing Marcus would hurt you but not destroy you.
I never asked why your strength made your pain seem affordable to me.
The sentence stopped me.
It resembled the logic my entire marriage had used.
Clara can handle it.
Clara will earn more.
Clara does not need help.
Strength had become permission.
Chloe continued.
I know I was not the first betrayal.
Marcus and Eleanor created the plan before I entered.
But I was not a child.
I saw your kindness and used it.
I am sorry.
I did not reply.
The letter contained real insight.
That did not require a relationship.
Years later, I learned Chloe had completed accounting courses in prison.
After release, she worked for a nonprofit helping women exit coercive financial relationships.
Some people found that offensive.
They believed a person who caused harm should never work near victims.
Others called it redemption.
I called it a life I did not control.
She was required to disclose her conviction.
The organization chose whether her experience was useful.
