Chapter 14 - THE EMERGENCY ORDER

My mother held the paper like a weapon.

“You cannot keep me from my grandson.”

Security stepped between us.

I did not move.

“What is that?”

“A court order.”

Daniel arrived minutes later and read it.

His face hardened.

It was an emergency petition granting Eleanor temporary access to Noah pending a guardianship hearing.

The supporting evidence described Clara as physically weakened and emotionally unstable.

It described me as violent.

It included testimony from Rebecca Knox.

And photographs of the destroyed dining room.

My mother had turned my act of protecting Clara into evidence against me.

Daniel looked at the filing time.

“This was submitted before Noah was born.”

“How?”

“They anticipated the birth.”

I stared at Eleanor.

“You planned this.”

“I planned to protect my grandson.”

“From whom?”

“His parents.”

Clara’s voice came from behind me.

She was in a wheelchair.

Pale.

Exhausted.

But upright.

“Say it to me.”

Eleanor looked at her.

“You should be resting.”

“Say it.”

My mother smiled.

“You are not capable of raising a Vance heir.”

Clara’s hands tightened around the blanket.

“I am his mother.”

“You are temporary.”

That sentence ended any remaining ambiguity.

Detective Harris had arrived behind Eleanor.

He heard it too.

Daniel stepped forward.

“This order gives supervised access only.”

“It does not transfer custody.”

Eleanor’s smile faded slightly.

“And because the petition contains disputed medical testimony, we are requesting immediate review.”

My mother raised her chin.

“You cannot erase Clara’s condition.”

“No.”

I stepped beside my wife.

“But we can explain who caused it.”

Daniel handed Harris a drive containing the recordings.

Then he gave copies to the hospital attorney.

One hour later, an emergency judge joined by video conference.

The dining room footage played.

The kitchen footage played.

The fake messages were entered into evidence.

The forged guardianship papers were shown.

Rebecca Knox’s unauthorized medical access was confirmed by hospital administration.

The judge stared into the camera.

“Mrs. Vance.”

My mother sat silently.

“Your petition is denied.”

Eleanor’s face hardened.

The judge continued.

“You are prohibited from contacting Clara Vance or the infant until further order.”

My mother stood.

“This is outrageous.”

“Sit down.”

Eleanor froze.

I had never heard anyone speak to her that way.

The judge referred the matter to investigators.

Rebecca Knox was suspended immediately.

As security escorted Eleanor away, she turned toward me.

“You think you won.”

I said nothing.

“You still don’t know what your wife did.”

Clara’s face changed.

I looked at her.

“What does she mean?”

Eleanor smiled.

Finally, she had found something that frightened Clara.

“Ask her where she got the money when your first company failed.”

Then security took my mother away.

I turned toward Clara.

She was staring at the floor.

“Clara?”

Her voice was barely audible.

“She’s trying to hurt us.”

“I know.”

“But is there something I need to know?”

Clara closed her eyes.

May you like

“Yes.”

And suddenly, twelve years of our marriage opened another door.
