Chapter 10 - THE DEBT NO ONE KNEW ABOUT

Eleanor owed $27 million.

Not to a bank.

To a private lender called Branton Capital.

The loans had accumulated over eleven years.

Jewelry.

Real estate speculation.

Luxury travel.

Bad investments.

Gambling losses hidden through shell companies.

My mother had spent decades presenting herself as the widow who sacrificed everything.

In truth, she had been financing a lifestyle with forged documents.

Daniel placed the loan agreement in front of me.

“If Branton believes these shares are valid collateral, they may attempt to enforce.”

“They aren’t valid.”

“Correct.”

“But litigation could freeze company assets.”

I rubbed my forehead.

“When is the loan due?”

“Ten days.”

A deadline.

Of course.

“Where is Eleanor?”

“We don’t know.”

“Gerald?”

“Also missing.”

“And Julian?”

“Still with them, we think.”

That worried me more than the money.

I called Julian again.

Nothing.

Then Clara called from the hospital.

“Sebastian?”

Her voice sounded anxious.

“What happened?”

“A woman came to my room.”

I stood immediately.

“Who?”

“She said she was a social worker.”

“What did she want?”

“She asked whether I felt safe going home with you.”

My entire body tightened.

“Where is security?”

“They were outside.”

“They let her in because she had hospital identification.”

“Did she give you a name?”

“Rebecca Knox.”

Gerald’s daughter.

The same nurse who had accessed Clara’s records.

I called security.

Rebecca had disappeared before anyone stopped her.

But she had left behind a questionnaire.

Several questions were already answered.

Clara was described as emotionally unstable.

I was described as aggressive.

The dining room incident was framed as evidence that I had “destroyed property during a rage episode.”

I almost laughed.

My mother was adapting.

If she could no longer portray Clara as the only unstable parent, she would portray both of us as unfit.

Then Daniel called.

“Sebastian, you need to see something.”

One of the house recordings showed Eleanor speaking with Rebecca Knox.

The conversation took place four days before the banquet.

Rebecca said, “If the child is delivered early, the hospital can delay discharge.”

My mother answered, “How early?”

“Any distress could justify observation.”

“And Clara?”

“We document instability.”

I felt cold.

Rebecca continued.

“Then Gerald files emergency guardianship.”

My mother smiled.

“How long would I have the baby?”

“Long enough.”

Long enough for what?

The next line answered.

Eleanor said, “Sebastian will sign the debt restructuring if he believes his son depends on me.”

I finally understood the complete plan.

My mother’s objective had never been only Clara.

She needed control of our son because she needed leverage over me.

She wanted me to validate the forged collateral and rescue her $27 million debt.

Clara and our baby were bargaining chips.

I looked at Daniel.

“Call Branton Capital.”

“Why?”

“Because I want to buy the debt.”

He stared at me.

“All of it?”

“Yes.”

“What are you planning?”

I looked at the loan documents.

“My mother built this trap using my money.”

“Now I’m going to own the trap.”
