CHAPTER 3: THE NAME BENEATH THE COMPANY

The mansion went into lockdown automatically.

Steel doors sealed the corridors. Guards spread through the estate. But I didn’t move.

Because for the first time in years, I felt it—

A familiar pattern.

Corporate warfare never starts with money.

It starts with people you trust.

Elena struggled to sit up, breathing uneven. “Marcus didn’t do this alone.”

Veronica scoffed immediately. “Of course she’s blaming my fiancé now.”

But Elena ignored her.

Instead, she looked directly at me.

“Do you know why I signed the divorce papers so easily?”

Silence.

Even the fire seemed to pause.

“I didn’t betray you,” she said softly. “I was traded.”

That word changed everything.

Traded wasn’t emotional.

It was transactional.

She continued, trembling.

“Marcus Vale didn’t build your rival empire alone. He used inside access. He used me. And when I found out the real structure behind your company… I tried to run.”

She coughed, pain flashing across her face.

“They caught me before I could expose it. That barcode… is not just detention. It’s ownership tracking.”

My jaw tightened.

Veronica stepped forward. “This is ridiculous. Adrian, she’s—”

“Stop talking,” I said quietly.

It wasn’t loud.

But it cut through her like glass.

I turned back to Elena.

“What structure?”

Her lips parted.

And she said the name that I had never seen in any legal document.

“The Vale Syndicate.”

A hidden consortium. Not a company.

A system.

Built through mergers, marriages, and manufactured betrayals.

And then she said the final piece:

“Your entire empire… was never yours. It was built to be absorbed.”

The room went cold.

Even Veronica stopped breathing.

Because suddenly, everything made sense.

The cameras.

The merger push.

The timing of Elena’s return.

And the fact that I had been allowed to rebuild.

Too easily.

May you like

Too perfectly.

Like someone had been shaping me into something ready to break.
