Chapter 8 – The Video Richard Never Wanted Anyone to See

No one spoke as Marco clicked the file.

The screen flickered to life.

Richard Hale appeared sitting alone in what looked like a law office. Behind him were floor-to-ceiling shelves lined with legal books, but his face carried none of the confidence of a successful attorney. He looked exhausted, as if he had not slept for days.

A digital timestamp in the corner read:

Three Years Earlier.

Richard looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this, I'm either dead... or someone finally decided the truth was worth hearing."

The room fell silent.

He took a shaky breath.

"Claire Carter, I don't expect forgiveness. I don't deserve it."

I felt Emma's small hand slip into mine.

"Your husband, Daniel Carter, was the bravest man I ever met."

Tears blurred my vision.

Richard continued.

"Daniel discovered that Harbor Crest Construction had been using substandard steel on multiple waterfront projects. The fraud involved millions of dollars and several influential investors."

Marco paused the video.

"Harbor Crest..."

He looked toward Alessandro.

"It was never owned by the Moretti family."

Alessandro nodded.

"I know."

"Then who owned it?"

Marco reopened one of the digital files stored on the flash drive.

A corporate ownership chart appeared.

At the top was one name.

Victor Cole.

Vanessa's father.

Gasps filled the conference room.

I stared at the screen.

"No..."

Richard's recorded voice continued.

"Victor Cole ordered the cover-up after Daniel refused a payoff."

The next image showed scanned bank records.

Two million dollars.

Transferred to shell companies controlled by Richard Hale.

"I took the money," Richard admitted on the recording.

"I told myself I was only protecting my career."

His voice broke.

"But Daniel died because I helped the wrong people."

Another document appeared.

An internal memo.

Remove Carter before Monday hearing.

Signed only with the initials:

V.C.

Alessandro's jaw tightened.

"So Vanessa's father eliminated the whistleblower."

Marco nodded grimly.

"It appears that way."

The video wasn't finished.

Richard leaned closer to the camera.

"After Daniel's death, Victor feared Claire might continue asking questions."

A photograph appeared.

It showed me pushing Emma's stroller through a park.

I had never seen it before.

"He ordered private investigators to monitor Claire."

I felt sick.

"For how long?" I whispered.

Marco checked the file dates.

"Nearly three years."

Every movement.

Every job.

Every address.

Someone had always been watching.

Richard wiped tears from his face.

"Then Victor learned Claire accepted a housekeeping position at the Moretti estate."

He lowered his head.

"That's when everything changed."

Alessandro frowned.

"What does that mean?"

The next sentence answered him.

"Vanessa didn't choose Alessandro because she loved him."

The screen changed to another scanned document.

At the top:

Operation Legacy

Richard's voice became almost a whisper.

"She was sent into his life."

The room went completely still.

"Sent?" Marco repeated.

Richard nodded on the screen.

"Victor wanted control of the Moretti empire."

Another page appeared.

Flowcharts.

Family trees.

Inheritance calculations.

Marriage timelines.

Everything had been planned years in advance.

The fake pregnancy...

The engagement...

Even the wedding date.

It was all part of a strategy.

Then Richard spoke the words that made Alessandro slowly stand from his chair.

"Claire was never supposed to survive long enough to learn the truth."

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"What...?"

Richard closed his eyes.

"Victor believed eliminating Daniel would silence the family."

He opened them again.

"But he underestimated one person."

The screen froze briefly before the final sentence appeared.

"Emma was never part of the original plan..."

Richard looked straight into the camera.

"...until someone discovered who her real father is."

The video ended.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

I looked at Alessandro.

He looked at me.

Neither of us spoke.

May you like

Because somewhere in the silence...

We both understood that Richard had died before finishing the most important sentence of all.
