Chapter 1 – The Locked Doors

The heavy oak doors of the Moretti ballroom slammed shut with a force that made every crystal chandelier tremble.
No one moved.
The musicians lowered their instruments. Waiters stood frozen beside silver trays. Even the rain outside seemed quieter, as though the storm itself wanted to hear what happened next.
Alessandro Moretti remained perfectly still.
"Nobody leaves," he said.
His voice wasn't loud.
It never needed to be.
Within seconds, four members of his private security team appeared from different corners of the ballroom. They wore black suits instead of uniforms, but every guest knew who they were. Former military. Loyal only to Alessandro.
Vanessa's smile finally cracked.
"Alessandro..."
He raised one finger.
"Don't."
The single word silenced her.
He turned toward his chief of security.
"Marco."
A broad-shouldered man stepped forward.
"Yes, sir."
"Search Miss Cole's suite."
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"You can't be serious."
"I am."
"This is insane! You're humiliating your fiancée because of a sick child?"
Alessandro looked at Emma, still hiding behind my legs.
"Children don't invent details like receipts and flowered boxes."
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
"You don't trust me?"
He slowly removed her hand.
"I verify everyone."
The sentence landed like a hammer.
Several guests exchanged uneasy glances. They knew Alessandro's reputation. He had once spent six months investigating a business partner before signing a contract worth two billion dollars.
If he investigated billionaires...
He would certainly investigate a pregnancy.
Vanessa's voice became sharper.
"You are embarrassing me in front of everyone."
"No," Alessandro replied calmly.
"If you're telling the truth, this investigation protects you."
The ballroom fell silent again.
I wished I could disappear.
Emma's tiny fingers clung tightly to my skirt. Her forehead still felt warm from the fever.
"I'm sorry," I whispered.
Alessandro looked at me.
"For what?"
"I never wanted this."
"I know."
It was such a simple answer that it nearly broke me.
Across the room, whispers spread like wildfire.
"The maid..."
"Did she really find something?"
"Could the baby be fake?"
"I heard Vanessa canceled three doctor's appointments..."
Rumors multiplied within seconds.
Vanessa noticed them too.
Panic flashed across her face before she buried it beneath another practiced smile.
She suddenly doubled over, placing both hands on her stomach.
"Oh..."
Her breathing became dramatic.
"The baby..."
Several women rushed toward her.
"She's fainting!"
"Call an ambulance!"
"My God!"
Vanessa collapsed elegantly into the arms of two socialites.
Doctors attending the gala hurried over.
One checked her pulse.
Another knelt beside her.
"She's under severe stress," he announced.
"She needs immediate medical attention."
Vanessa opened tear-filled eyes.
"Please..."
She looked directly at Alessandro.
"Our baby..."
For the first time all evening, hesitation crossed his face.
It lasted exactly three seconds.
Then Marco's voice crackled through the security radio.
"Sir."
Everyone looked up.
Marco's face had gone pale.
"We found the closet."
May you like
He paused.
"And...we found something else."
