Chapter 16 - THE ROOM WITHOUT A JACUZZI

The contractor expected me to replace the jacuzzi with another luxury feature.

I did not.

The master bathroom became an ordinary space.

A walk-in shower.

A simple bench.

Open shelves.

No heart-shaped tub.

No dramatic centerpiece.

I did not need architecture to prove I had loved someone.

The old jacuzzi was removed in pieces.

I watched workers carry it through the house.

The final section contained a small waterproof pouch trapped beneath the frame.

Inside was a memory card.

Julian had hidden another recording device near the tub.

He had recorded conversations with Mia.

He had also recorded himself.

The card contained months of audio.

Some files were already part of the criminal case.

Others were new.

In one recording, Julian spoke with a North Crest executive.

He planned to retain a secret percentage of the spa company after the sale.

Beatrice believed the proceeds would go into the family trust.

Julian intended to cheat his mother.

In another recording, Beatrice told Peter that Julian would become a liability after my death.

“What do we do with him?” Peter asked.

Beatrice answered without hesitation.

“Malcolm can diagnose grief.”

A longer hospital stay would give her temporary control over Julian’s assets.

She had planned to declare her own son unstable after he helped kill me.

Julian had spent his life believing he was the chosen child.

He was only the next useful person.

Rachel sent the recording to prosecutors.

It did not change the sentence.

It changed something inside me.

For months, part of me wondered whether Julian might have become different without Beatrice.

The recording gave me the honest answer.

He had made his choices.

But the person he sacrificed everything to please had never planned to protect him.

Control does not create loyalty.

It creates a line of people waiting to betray one another first.

The spas recovered.

Clients returned.

Our employee ownership program expanded.

I created new policies protecting domestic workers who reported misconduct.

Mia’s actions had harmed me.

Her vulnerability had also been used against her.

Both facts could exist.

I established an independent scholarship for young women leaving exploitative employment situations.

It did not carry my name.

It did not carry Mia’s.

The first recipient was a hotel housekeeper studying accounting at night.

Denise became chief operating officer.

I no longer treated delegation as personal failure.

For years, I believed supporting everyone around me proved strength.

In reality, refusing help had made it easier for Julian to isolate me.

I also applied to Stanford again.

Not for the full-time MBA I once planned.

I enrolled in an executive program designed for business owners.

The acceptance email arrived on a Tuesday morning.

I stared at it for several minutes.

Then I printed it.

I placed it beside the stolen letter from ten years earlier.

One represented the future someone hid from me.

The other represented the future I chose with full information.

My mother cried when I told her.

My father opened champagne.

I laughed.

Then I poured mine into a clear glass and watched every drop.

The gesture was instinctive.

Healing does not mean the body forgets danger.

It means fear no longer makes every decision.
