Chapter 1 - THE LIGHT UNDER THE BATHROOM DOOR

The night of our anniversary, Julian told me not to wait up.
He said an emergency meeting had been scheduled with a client from New York.
He kissed my forehead without looking me in the eyes.
Then he added something that should have warned me.
“Don’t work too late, Harper.”
At the time, I thought he was being considerate.
I did not realize he was checking whether I planned to come home.
My assistant canceled my final appointment at the spa shortly after six.
A broken water heater had flooded one of the treatment rooms, and the maintenance team needed the building empty.
I could have stayed.
Instead, I decided to surprise my husband.
I bought his favorite bottle of red wine.
I picked up the lemon cake we had served at our wedding.
I drove home smiling like a woman who still believed the man she married deserved one more chance to remember what our anniversary meant.
The estate was dark when I arrived.
Julian’s car was parked behind the guest garage where it could not be seen from the driveway.
I recognized it immediately.
My first thought was relief.
He had come home early to surprise me.
Then I noticed Mia’s bedroom light was off.
Her coat was missing from the hook near the kitchen.
Soft music drifted from upstairs.
It was the playlist Julian and I used during our first vacation in Napa.
The wine bottle became heavy in my hand.
I walked toward the master suite.
Steam curled from beneath the bathroom door.
Then I heard Mia laugh.
It was not the quiet, nervous laugh she used around me.
It was relaxed.
Confident.
Intimate.
Julian answered her.
“Harper won’t be home for hours.”
The cake box slipped against my palm.
I placed it silently on the floor.
My body wanted to burst through the door.
My mind told me to wait.
Through the narrow opening, I saw the room I had designed as a sanctuary.
Candles flickered along the marble ledge.
Rose petals floated in the jacuzzi.
Julian leaned against the curved edge with one arm around Mia.
She wore the silk robe I had bought for myself in Paris.
My husband lifted a glass of champagne.
“To ten years.”
Mia smiled.
“To the last anniversary you’ll ever spend married to her.”
Julian kissed her.
Something inside me became completely still.
I did not scream.
I did not cry.
I stepped backward and closed the outer bedroom door.
Then I used the house-control application on my phone.
The jacuzzi room had been built with a privacy lock.
It could be secured from inside.
It could also be overridden through the home system during emergencies.
I locked the bathroom doors.
I disabled the electronic windows.
Then I turned off the hot-water system.
Julian tried the handle moments later.
“Harper?”
He must have seen my name on the control screen.
He hit the door.
“Harper, open this.”
Mia began whispering rapidly.
I walked downstairs.
I placed the anniversary cake on the dining table.
Then I called Beatrice Caldwell.
“Your son planned a surprise for our anniversary.”
She sounded delighted.
“I knew he would come through.”
“I think the whole family should see it.”
I invited Beatrice.
Julian’s father, Charles.
His sister, Lauren.
His brother, Nathan.
And Aunt Vivian, the woman who had once told me Julian would never survive without my money.
They all agreed to come.
None of them knew the surprise was waiting behind a locked bathroom door.
What I did not know was that Beatrice had already seen Julian and Mia together.
She had known for six months.

And the moment she received my invitation, she did not call her son to warn him.
She called a lawyer.
