Chapter 4 — Running with the Devil

By dawn, Chicago was hunting us.
Not the police.
Victor Marino.
Every safe house Griffin used had been compromised.
Every route was watched.
Which meant someone inside Griffin’s organization was feeding information to Vanessa.
We fled through the city in a black SUV while rain hammered the windshield.
“You should leave me behind,” I said.
Griffin glanced over.
“And let them kill the woman who saved my life?”
“You barely know me.”
“I know you walked into a ballroom full of armed criminals and warned me anyway.”
His voice softened.
“Most people would have stayed silent.”
I looked away.
“I used to.”
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Griffin’s phone rang.
He answered, listened, and his expression darkened.
“They found the leak.”
“Who?”
“My head of security.”
The man driving our SUV suddenly reached for his jacket.
Griffin moved first.
A gun appeared in his hand.
One deafening shot.
The driver collapsed.
The SUV swerved violently.
Griffin grabbed the wheel and wrestled the vehicle onto an abandoned industrial road.
My heart nearly stopped.
He checked the dead driver’s phone.

Then he looked at me.
“Victor knows exactly where we are.”
