Chapter 3 — The Man in the Gray Suit

They moved me to a private penthouse suite above the hotel.
Two armed guards stood outside the door.
I should have been terrified.
Instead, I was furious.
“I saved his life,” I told the guard. “This feels a lot like kidnapping.”
“Around Mr. Hale,” the guard replied, “those are sometimes the same thing.”
An hour later, Griffin arrived.
He removed his jacket and loosened his tie, looking less like a mafia boss and more like a man carrying a thousand problems.
“My people identified the man Vanessa met with,” he said.
He slid a photo across the table.
A silver-haired man in a gray suit.
Cold eyes.
“Victor Marino,” Griffin said. “Vanessa’s uncle.”
“Is that bad?”
Griffin laughed once.
“Victor runs half the weapons moving through the Great Lakes.”
My stomach dropped.
Then Griffin said something worse.
“He disappeared twenty minutes after you kissed me.”
As if summoned by the thought, a gunshot cracked outside.
The penthouse windows exploded inward.
Griffin grabbed me and pulled me to the floor as bullets tore through the room.
“Stay down!”
His body covered mine while his men returned fire.
Glass rained everywhere.
Someone screamed in the hallway.
Griffin’s expression became terrifyingly cold.
“They’re cleaning up witnesses.”

He looked directly at me.
“And that means they’re coming for you.”
