CHAPTER 4 — The Trap Begins to Close

For the next two weeks, Emma became the perfect wife.

She smiled.

She cooked dinner.

She packed Noah's lunch.

She kissed Ethan goodbye every morning.

Ethan relaxed.

Claire relaxed.

They believed Emma had accepted the affair.

What they didn't know...

Every conversation inside the house was being documented legally through her attorney's instructions.

Every financial move they made was monitored.

Every lie was becoming evidence.

One Friday afternoon Ethan rushed home smiling.

"I got approved."

Emma pretended not to understand.

"Approved for what?"

"My new business expansion."

"That's wonderful."

He leaned over and kissed her forehead.

For the first time in weeks...

Emma had to resist pulling away.

Because she knew the truth.

The bank had approved the loan.

But only because Emma's attorney had secretly notified federal investigators first.

Every dollar would now be tracked.

Claire called that evening.

"Can we meet?"

Emma agreed.

At the same little café where they had celebrated birthdays since college.

Claire cried almost immediately.

"I'm so sorry."

Emma simply stirred her coffee.

"I made a mistake."

Emma looked at her.

"No."

Claire blinked.

"You made thousands."

Claire froze.

Emma continued.

"The affair."

"The forged signatures."

"The stolen money."

"The fake companies."

Claire's face lost all color.

Emma stood.

"You should've stopped after the first lie."

Then she walked away.

Claire never touched her coffee.

Monday morning arrived.

Federal agents entered Ethan's office carrying search warrants.

His employees watched in stunned silence as computers, financial records, and hard drives disappeared into evidence boxes.

At the same moment...

Police officers knocked on Claire's front door.

Neighbors quietly watched from their windows.

Claire opened the door smiling.

She stopped smiling when she saw the badges.

One detective said only six words.

"Claire Bennett, we'd like to talk."

That evening Ethan burst through Emma's front door.

"You did this!"

Emma calmly folded Noah's laundry.

"I protected myself."

"You ruined everything!"

Emma looked directly into his eyes.

"No, Ethan."

"You ruined everything the day you decided my life belonged to you."

He opened his mouth.

No words came.

May you like

For the first time in years...

He had nothing left to manipulate.
