CHAPTER 3 — The Woman in the Gray Coat

Emma barely slept.
The anonymous envelope sat on her kitchen table beside a cold cup of coffee. She had read the purchase agreement so many times that she knew every line by heart.
The lake house wasn't just expensive.
It was meant to become a new life.
A new beginning.
For Ethan and Claire.
Funded with her money.
At exactly nine o'clock, her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She almost ignored it.
Instead, she answered.
"Mrs. Carter?"
The woman's voice was calm.
Professional.
"You don't know me, but we need to meet."
"Who is this?"
"I've been trying to stop your husband for six months."
Emma's pulse quickened.
"What are you talking about?"
"One hour. Riverside Botanical Garden. Come alone."
The line went dead.
Emma arrived ten minutes early.
A woman in a gray wool coat sat alone on a bench overlooking the river.
She looked to be in her early forties.
Sharp eyes.
Minimal makeup.
A leather briefcase rested beside her.
"You came," the woman said.
"You know my husband?"
"I know his accountant."
Emma sat without speaking.
The woman opened the briefcase and slid over a folder.
"My name is Laura Pierce. I'm a forensic auditor."
Inside were bank statements.
Property records.
Emails.
Corporate filings.
Every page connected Ethan and Claire through a maze of shell companies.
Laura spoke quietly.
"Ethan thought he was clever. He used family accounts because banks rarely question transfers between spouses."
"Why help me?"
Laura hesitated.
"Because my husband did the same thing."
Emma looked up.
"He left me bankrupt. I don't let men like that succeed anymore."
Meanwhile, Ethan was falling apart.
Claire paced her living room.
"What if she knows?"
"She doesn't."
"You don't know that."
Ethan slammed his fist against the counter.
"Stop panicking."
Claire's voice cracked.
"You said she'd never check the accounts!"
"I said she'd never suspect me."
There was a difference.
Neither noticed the security camera across the street recording Ethan's car outside Claire's house for the third consecutive morning.
Laura wasn't finished.
"There are more accounts."
Emma frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"Ethan recently applied for a business loan."
"I never signed one."
Laura slowly slid over another document.
"You did."
Emma stared.
Her signature appeared at the bottom.
Perfect.
Flawless.
Except...
It wasn't hers.
Someone had copied it.
Laura whispered,
"They're preparing to default on the loan."
Emma understood instantly.
"They'll blame me."
Laura nodded.
"And when everything collapses, they'll disappear into the new house."
Emma felt cold.
This had never been about love.
It had been about escape.
That night, Emma made her first move.
She didn't confront Ethan.
She didn't call Claire.
Instead, she quietly hired the best family attorney in the state.
Then she hired a private investigator.
Finally, she changed every password Ethan had ever known.
When Ethan tried logging into their joint investment account from Claire's apartment...
Access Denied.
His phone buzzed.
Security Alert: Password Changed Successfully.
His face turned white.
Claire looked over.
"What happened?"
May you like
Ethan whispered the words neither of them had expected.
"She's awake."
