Chapter 15 – The Man on the Mountain

No one moved.

The frozen image of the man on the porch remained on the monitor.

Gray hair.

Weathered face.

A faded denim jacket.

He didn't look like a fugitive.

He looked like someone who had been waiting for visitors.

Agent Brooks replayed the final six seconds.

"It's about time you found me."

Karen looked toward Gabriel.

"Is that your brother?"

Gabriel stared at the screen.

Tears filled his eyes.

"I haven't seen him since we were nineteen."

"But..."

He swallowed.

"That's Victor."

Within forty minutes, an FBI tactical convoy was climbing the narrow mountain road.

The estate sat alone on nearly two hundred acres of forest.

No neighboring houses.

No cell service.

Only one gravel road leading in or out.

Brooks studied the satellite images.

"If Victor wanted to disappear..."

"He chose the perfect place."

The tactical team surrounded the property before sunrise.

No movement.

No lights.

No vehicles.

Brooks gave the signal.

The front door swung open with a battering ram.

Nothing.

The house was immaculate.

A fire still burned in the stone fireplace.

Coffee steamed gently on the kitchen table.

Someone had been there only minutes earlier.

But they were gone.

Karen searched the study.

Unlike Eleanor's office, this room contained almost nothing personal.

Just books.

Maps.

A shortwave radio.

And a single framed photograph.

Victor stood beside a teenage boy.

The same boy at different ages appeared in several more photographs.

Fishing.

Hiking.

Learning to drive.

Karen turned to Gabriel.

"Who's the boy?"

Gabriel stared for a long moment.

"I've never seen him."

Emma, who had remained at headquarters with Ben and Noah, received a call from Brooks.

He described the photographs.

Ben, listening from across the room, quietly walked over.

"Can I see?"

Emma turned the tablet toward him.

Ben froze.

"I know him."

Emma's heart skipped.

"You do?"

Ben nodded.

"He taught me how to fish."

Meanwhile, Brooks discovered a locked cabinet hidden behind a bookshelf.

Inside were dozens of journals.

Every volume was dated.

The earliest began twenty-two years ago.

The latest...

Only three days earlier.

The first page of the newest journal contained a single sentence.

If Daniel is reading this, then Eleanor is finally gone.

Brooks immediately called me into the study.

I opened the journal with trembling hands.

Victor's handwriting was neat and deliberate.

I know you have been told I am a monster.

Perhaps I deserve that.

But before you judge me, you must know why I disappeared.

The next page began with a name.

Grace Bennett.

Victor wrote that he met Grace shortly after Arthur Carter confessed the truth.

Arthur had secretly acknowledged Grace as his daughter years earlier.

He intended to divide his estate between his children.

Legally.

Openly.

Eleanor refused.

Victor claimed that when Arthur announced his decision, Eleanor threatened to destroy everyone involved.

At first, no one believed her.

Then Arthur died unexpectedly.

Karen looked up from another journal.

"There are dates."

She compared them with Arthur's medical records.

The final journal entry before Arthur's death matched the day he had suddenly suffered what doctors believed was a fatal heart attack.

Brooks frowned.

"Exhume the body."

Karen nodded.

"If poison was involved..."

"We'll find it."

As the search of the estate continued, agents discovered something hidden beneath the wooden floorboards of Victor's bedroom.

A steel case.

Inside was a collection of VHS tapes.

Each was labeled with a year.

The oldest tape:

2003.

The newest:

Last Month.

Victor had been recording everything.

The first tape showed Arthur Carter speaking directly into a camera.

He looked older than in the audio recording.

Weaker.

But completely lucid.

"If you are seeing this..."

"...someone ignored my final wishes."

Arthur slowly placed several documents on the desk.

One of them was unmistakable.

His last will and testament.

Signed.

Witnessed.

Notarized.

Brooks compared it with the version filed in probate court years earlier.

They were different.

Completely different.

The genuine will left the Carter estate in equal shares.

One-third to Eleanor.

One-third to Victor.

One-third...

To Grace Bennett and her descendants.

The version admitted to court had removed Grace entirely.

Someone had replaced the original.

Then came another surprise.

Hidden inside the steel case was a DNA envelope.

It had never been opened.

The label read:

Jonathan Bennett – Age 18.

Karen looked at me.

"Victor collected Jonathan's DNA."

"But why?"

Brooks answered quietly.

"Maybe because Jonathan wasn't missing."

"He was hiding."

As forensic technicians cataloged the evidence, an alarm suddenly sounded outside.

One of the perimeter agents shouted into the radio.

"Vehicle approaching!"

Everyone rushed outside.

A black pickup truck slowly rolled through the open gate.

It stopped twenty yards from the house.

The driver stepped out.

He raised both hands.

No weapons.

No sudden movements.

He looked to be in his late forties.

Dark hair streaked with gray.

Calm blue eyes.

He looked directly at me.

Then at Gabriel.

Finally, he smiled sadly.

"Hello, little brother."

Gabriel's knees nearly gave out.

The man continued,

"My name is Victor Carter."

May you like

He paused before adding the words that silenced everyone present.

"And Daniel... I've been protecting your real father for twenty-three years."
