Chapter 12 – The Ghost in the System

Every monitor in the FBI conference room flickered back to life.

The warning message was gone.

Ben's medical file wasn't.

It had vanished completely.

No backup.

No access log.

No trace that it had ever existed.

A senior cybersecurity analyst stared at his screen in disbelief.

"I've never seen anything like this."

Karen folded her arms.

"Can you recover it?"

He shook his head.

"Whoever got in knew exactly what they were doing."

"They erased the records without touching anything else."

Agent Brooks frowned.

"So they don't want the investigation."

"They want the boy."

Ben was immediately placed under federal protection.

Two armed agents stood outside his hospital room.

Another monitored the hallway.

Emma volunteered to stay with him while Noah slept nearby.

The little boy sat quietly by the window, drawing with colored pencils the nurses had given him.

Emma glanced at the page.

"That's beautiful."

It wasn't.

It was unsettling.

The drawing showed a large house surrounded by grapevines.

Beneath the house...

He had carefully sketched another building.

Underground.

Connected by a long tunnel.

Emma knelt beside him.

"What is this?"

Ben answered without looking up.

"The secret house."

Karen arrived minutes later.

She studied the drawing.

"Ben..."

"Have you been there?"

He nodded.

"I lived there sometimes."

"Who took you?"

"The old man."

"Victor?"

"I think so."

Karen pointed to the tunnel.

"Where does this go?"

Ben traced the line with his finger.

"To the room with the train."

"The train?"

Ben smiled.

"It isn't real."

"It just sounds like one."

Karen immediately photographed the drawing and sent it to Brooks.

Within an hour, architects compared it with the original blueprints of the Carter vineyard.

Nothing matched.

Officially.

Then an eighty-year-old maintenance supervisor made an unexpected phone call.

"I helped build that estate," he said.

"There was a rumor."

"What rumor?" Brooks asked.

"The founder ordered an escape tunnel during Prohibition."

"Nobody believed it."

"Because it disappeared from every blueprint."

A ground-penetrating radar team was dispatched to the vineyard before sunset.

The equipment scanned beneath the oldest wine cellar.

For several minutes...

Nothing.

Then the screen displayed a long rectangular void.

Almost one hundred feet beneath the ground.

Karen looked at Brooks.

"Ben wasn't imagining it."

The tactical team broke through a concrete wall hidden behind old wine barrels.

Cold air rushed out.

The tunnel stretched into darkness.

Electric lights lined the ceiling.

Someone had maintained it recently.

The dust was disturbed.

Fresh footprints led deeper inside.

Brooks insisted on leading the entry team himself.

Karen followed.

I refused to stay behind.

The tunnel smelled damp, with a faint scent of machine oil.

After nearly ten minutes of walking...

They found a steel door.

The number 18 was engraved into the center.

Karen looked at the small brass key taken from Ben's necklace.

It fit perfectly.

The heavy lock clicked open.

Inside wasn't a bunker.

It was a private underground railway platform.

Rust-covered tracks disappeared into the darkness.

An old electric rail cart sat silently beside the platform.

Ben had been right.

It wasn't a train.

Just a maintenance trolley.

But someone had converted it into a hidden transportation system.

The platform connected to another underground chamber.

Unlike the surveillance room, this place looked untouched.

Dust covered the furniture.

Old portraits hung on the walls.

A grandfather clock had stopped at exactly 11:47.

On a large oak desk sat a leather-bound ledger.

Its title read:

Family Continuity Project

Karen carefully opened it.

The first page listed names.

Arthur Carter.

Eleanor Carter.

Victor Carter.

Grace Bennett.

Jonathan Bennett.

Daniel Carter.

Ben.

Every generation.

Connected by arrows.

Dates.

Notes.

As though someone had been tracking a bloodline for decades.

Then Brooks noticed something strange.

One name had been crossed out with thick black ink.

Only part of it remained visible.

...hael Carter

Michael?

Raphael?

Nathaniel?

The first letters had been deliberately scratched away.

Beside the name someone had written:

Subject relocated. Identity reassigned.

A chill ran down my spine.

"Identity reassigned..."

Karen looked directly at me.

"The same phrase appeared in the forged birth records."

Suddenly...

A loud metallic bang echoed through the tunnel.

Everyone froze.

Another bang.

Closer this time.

One of the agents spoke into his radio.

"Movement detected behind us."

The tactical team raised their weapons.

The lights flickered once.

Twice.

Then every light in the tunnel went out.

Darkness swallowed everything.

Only emergency flashlights remained.

Somewhere ahead...

Footsteps echoed.

Slow.

Measured.

Not running.

Walking.

As if whoever was approaching wanted us to hear them.

A voice emerged from the darkness.

Calm.

Older.

Unmistakably familiar.

"Daniel..."

"I've waited twenty-three years to tell you the truth."

The flashlight beam landed on the man's face.

His beard was gray.

His clothes were worn.

But I recognized him instantly.

It was Uncle Victor.

Very much alive.

And instead of pointing a weapon at us...

May you like

He slowly raised both hands and said,

"Your mother lied to everyone... including me."
