Chapter 9 - THE BOARDROOM AMBUSH

Vale Global’s emergency board meeting was held the following Monday.

Damian’s allies believed my family scandal had weakened me.

Three board members demanded that I temporarily step aside.

They claimed the investigation created instability.

They also argued that Clara’s medical condition made my judgment unreliable.

I entered the boardroom with Marcus, Nathan Brooks, my corporate attorney, and Detective Monroe.

Clara remained at home under medical advice.

However, she had prepared a statement.

The boardroom occupied the seventy-second floor of Vale Tower.

My grandfather’s portrait hung behind the chairman’s seat.

Helena had always used that portrait to remind me that I inherited a legacy.

She ignored the years when the company consisted of one rented office and four employees.

I did not inherit Vale Global.

I built it.

Damian entered through a video connection from county detention.

His attorney sat beside him.

“Julian is emotionally compromised,” Damian announced.

“He returned from an exhausting trip and misinterpreted a private family situation.”

I activated the wall screen.

Footage appeared showing Clara washing dishes while Helena stood behind her.

“You missed a spot,” Helena said in the recording.

Clara’s hands were visibly shaking.

Sienna entered and placed a cup of tea beside her.

“Drink it,” Sienna ordered.

The footage changed.

Damian appeared inside my study, photographing confidential documents.

Then came recordings of fraudulent transfers.

Forged authorizations.

The sabotaged aircraft payment.

The boardroom became silent.

One of Damian’s allies, Victor Lang, stood abruptly.

“This material has not been authenticated.”

Marcus placed three sealed drives on the table.

“It has been authenticated by federal investigators.”

Victor reached for his phone.

Detective Monroe stepped forward.

“Sit down.”

His face drained of color.

Investigators had discovered that Victor received two million dollars to support Damian’s appointment as interim chief executive.

Two other directors were implicated.

All three were removed from the meeting.

I turned toward the remaining board members.

“My wife was imprisoned in my home while certain people in this room helped steal from this company.”

No one spoke.

“You questioned my judgment because I protected her.”

I placed both hands on the table.

“Anyone who believes loyalty is a weakness should resign now.”

Two directors looked down.

None moved.

I played Clara’s recorded statement.

She appeared on-screen wearing a simple white blouse.

Her bandaged hands rested in her lap.

“I am not asking this board to feel sorry for me,” she said.

“I am asking you to understand that people who abuse the powerless will eventually abuse every system they control.”

She described the isolation, financial restrictions, and forged communications.

Then she revealed something even I did not know.

“Before Julian left, Damian asked me to sign a document transferring my voting shares.”

My head turned toward Nathan.

Clara owned twelve percent of Vale Global.

She had received those shares when we married because I wanted her recognized as a founding partner.

“He told me it was an insurance update,” she continued.

“I refused.”

The next day, Helena moved into the estate.

Clara looked directly into the camera.

“This was never only about money.”

“They needed me to forget that I had power.”
