Chapter 12 - THE EMPTY NURSERY

The nursery was located at the east end of the second floor.
Clara and I had not entered it together.
She began preparing the room before my trip but stopped after Helena moved into the estate.
Marcus reached the hallway before us.
A window stood open.
Rain blew across the floor.
The crib had been overturned.
Drawers were pulled open.
Baby clothes were scattered across the carpet.
Clara stopped at the doorway.
“No.”
A message had been painted across the wall in black letters.
YOU WILL NEVER KEEP THIS CHILD.
I moved in front of Clara.
“Don’t look.”
She pushed past me.
“This is my baby’s room.”
Marcus’s team searched the grounds.
The intruder entered using an old service passage beneath the east terrace.
Only family members and longtime staff knew it existed.
The hidden camera captured a hooded figure.
Facial recognition could not identify the person.
However, the figure wore a distinctive gold ring.
It belonged to my uncle, Conrad Vale.
Conrad was Helena’s younger brother.
He had attended the celebration but left before Marcus closed the gates.
At least, that was what the guest list indicated.
Security footage showed Conrad lending his car to another guest two hours earlier.
He never left.
He hid in an unused wine storage room until after the arrests.
Then he escaped through the service passage.
Conrad had managed several family trusts before I removed him for financial misconduct.
I believed he moved to Europe.
Instead, Helena had been supporting him through shell companies.
Police located Conrad at a motel near the state border.
Inside his room, they found photographs of Clara, medical equipment, and an airline ticket to a country without an extradition treaty.
The ticket was for one passenger.
The name printed on it was Clara Vale.
They intended to remove her from the country alive.
A private clinic overseas had agreed to admit her under a false identity.
Once there, she would have no legal access to money or communication.
Conrad refused to answer questions.
His attorney claimed Helena hired him only to protect family property.
The nursery vandalism was meant to frighten Clara into leaving the estate before the criminal trial.
It accomplished the opposite.
Clara stood in the ruined room while investigators collected evidence.
Her hands trembled.
Her voice did not.
“I’m testifying.”
I had hoped she would not need to.
The recordings were strong.
Evelyn’s testimony was powerful.
Sienna had agreed to cooperate.
But Helena’s defense planned to describe Clara as confused and emotionally unstable.
Clara wanted the jury to see her.
“I don’t want them telling my story while I hide,” she said.
“This is not hiding.”
“It feels like it.”
I touched her cheek.
“You do not owe anyone your pain.”
“No.”
May you like
She looked at the words painted across the wall.
“But I owe myself the truth.”
