Chapter 3 – The Child Who Changed Everything
The hospital emergency entrance exploded into motion the moment Daniel's black SUV stopped.
Doctors rushed Emily through the sliding doors before she could even thank him.
Daniel stayed close behind.
Twenty minutes later...
A surgeon walked into the waiting room.
His face revealed everything before he spoke.
Emily collapsed.
"No..."
"Please..."
The doctor knelt beside her.
"We were able to restart his heart."
"But he needs surgery immediately."
"It's his only chance."
Emily buried her face in her hands.
"I don't have insurance."
"I already sold my apartment."
"I sold everything."
"There isn't any money left."
Daniel quietly asked one question.
"How much?"
The surgeon hesitated.
"Two hundred and eighty thousand dollars."
Without blinking, Daniel pulled out his phone.
"Prepare the operating room."
"I'll cover every cent."
Emily stared at him.
"You don't even know us."
Daniel looked toward the operating room doors.
"My wife made sure your son almost died."
"I'm making sure he lives."
Hours passed.
Near sunrise...
The surgeon finally returned.
The operation was successful.
Emily broke into uncontrollable tears.
Daniel smiled for the first time that night.
Then his phone rang.
It was his private investigator.
"Mr. Cole..."
"I found something."
"It's about your wife."
Daniel stepped outside.
"What is it?"
"Victoria never accidentally met you."
"There was no chance encounter."
"She targeted you years before your wedding."
Daniel frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
"Someone paid her."
"And we just discovered who."
The investigator paused.
"It's your late father's business partner."
"The man who inherited half your family's company."
Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.
"What does he have to do with Victoria?"
