CHAPTER 5 — THERE IS ALWAYS TOMORROW

Fifteen years later...
Emily stood backstage at a crowded convention center.
Hundreds of foster parents, social workers, police officers, and child advocates filled the auditorium.
The keynote speaker stepped onto the stage.
Dr. Clara Vance.
Child psychologist.
Founder of the Tomorrow House Foundation.
She smiled toward the front row.
Emily sat there wearing the same quiet expression she had worn the day they first met.
Proud.
Humble.
Present.
Clara began her speech.
"When I was seven years old..."
"I believed adults only came in two kinds."
"The ones who hurt you."
"And the ones who looked away."
She paused.
"Then one woman opened her apartment door."
The audience turned toward Emily.
"She wasn't rich."
"She wasn't powerful."
"She wasn't perfect."
"But when everyone else measured whether I was worth saving..."
"She simply stayed."
Emily lowered her head, wiping away tears.
After the standing ovation, Clara walked off the stage.
Without saying a word...
she hugged Emily exactly the way she had on that terrifying night years before.
Only this time...
there was no fear.
No bruises.
No sirens.
Just peace.
Emily smiled.
"So..."
"Vanilla cupcakes?"
Clara laughed.
"Just because."
They walked outside together.
The evening sky glowed gold above the city.
Children played in the nearby park.
Parents called them home for dinner.
Emily slipped her arm around her daughter.
For years, Clara had hidden cupcakes because she feared there might not be another tomorrow.
Now...
tomorrow was something she looked forward to.
And for the first time in both their lives...
May you like
they knew with absolute certainty...
there would always be one.
