CHAPTER 4 — LEARNING TO BE A FAMILY

Scars didn't disappear.
They simply stopped deciding the future.
One year became two.
Emily officially adopted Clara.
The courtroom felt completely different this time.
No fear.
No lawyers arguing.
Just laughter.
The judge handed Clara a certificate.
"So..."
he smiled.
"What would you like your full name to be?"
Clara looked at Emily.
Then grinned.
"Clara Vance."
Emily covered her mouth.
She hadn't expected that.
The judge laughed.
"I think that's settled."
Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.
Emily politely declined interviews.
She didn't want fame.
She wanted groceries.
Homework.
Movie nights.
Ordinary life.
That evening, they celebrated with pizza and vanilla cupcakes.
Just before blowing out the candles, Clara asked,
"Can I call you Mom now?"
Emily couldn't answer.
She simply nodded.
Clara wrapped her arms around her.
"I knew you'd stay."
Years passed.
The nightmares became less frequent.
Clara joined the school art club.
She learned piano.
She laughed loudly.
Sometimes too loudly.
Emily loved every second of it.
May you like
Because every laugh proved something.
Fear had finally lost.
