Chapter 8 - EMILY’S STORY

Emily grew up inside a trailer park outside Dayton.

Her father left when she was five.

Her mother, Susan, cleaned motel rooms and worked nights inside a grocery warehouse.

They were poor.

They were not dirty.

They were not lazy.

They were not ashamed until people with more money taught them they were supposed to be.

Emily earned scholarships.

She worked in the university cafeteria.

That was where we met.

I spilled coffee across my accounting textbook.

She gave me a towel and told me wealth clearly could not purchase coordination.

I fell in love with her before learning where she lived.

Margaret liked Emily until she visited Susan’s trailer.

After that, every compliment carried a hidden insult.

“You’ve done so well considering your background.”

“You dress much better now.”

“Daniel rescued you from a difficult life.”

Emily had never needed rescue.

She became a pediatric occupational therapist.

She helped children regain movement after injury.

She earned her own income.

She supported me when I rebuilt the company.

Yet my family continued describing her as a beneficiary of my success.

I allowed it.

At the hotel, Emily told Lily about Susan.

“Grandma Susan worked very hard.”

“Did she live in a trailer?”

“Yes.”

“Was it bad?”

“It was small.”

“The roof leaked.”

“But it was home.”

Lily looked at me.

“Why did Grandma Margaret call it trash?”

“Because she wanted to hurt your mother.”

“Why?”

“Because some people feel powerful when they make someone else feel small.”

Lily frowned.

“Is Grandma Margaret a bad person?”

I looked toward Emily.

She allowed me to answer.

“She made a harmful choice.”

“She has made many harmful choices.”

“That does not mean every part of her is bad.”

“But we do not stay near someone while they are hurting us just because we love them.”

Lily nodded slowly.

“Can I still love her?”

“Yes.”

“You can love someone and need distance.”

The lesson was not only for Lily.

It was for me.
