Chapter 3: The Lies Finally Fell Apart

Two uniformed officers entered the restaurant.

Behind them came another detective carrying a small notebook.

"Who made the call?"

"I did," Elena answered.

She never raised her voice.

She simply pointed toward David.

"He assaulted my daughter in front of everyone here."

The detective looked around.

"Did anyone witness what happened?"

Almost every hand in the dining room went up.

The detective paused.

"I'll be speaking with each of you."

David immediately changed tactics.

"This is ridiculous," he insisted. "She slipped. I was trying to help her."

A waiter spoke before anyone else could.

"No, sir."

Everyone turned.

The young server swallowed hard.

"I watched you pull her by the hair."

Another server nodded.

"So did I."

Then the bartender added,

"The security cameras captured everything."

David froze.

Rebecca's confident smile disappeared.

"The cameras?" she asked.

The manager nodded.

"Every angle."

David looked toward Maya.

"Tell them it wasn't like that."

She remained silent.

He softened his voice.

"Maya... sweetheart..."

Nothing.

For years, that gentle tone had always worked after the yelling ended.

Not tonight.

Instead, Maya slowly rolled up the sleeve of her blouse.

Dark bruises covered her upper arm.

Several people gasped.

The detective noticed immediately.

"How long have those been there?"

Maya looked at her mother.

Then she finally answered.

"Months."

The restaurant seemed to stop breathing.

Rebecca stood abruptly.

"She's lying!"

Maya looked at her for the first time all evening.

"No."

Her voice was steady.

"I've been protecting your son."

Silence.

"I told everyone I bumped into doors."

"I said I fell down stairs."

"I covered my neck with scarves."

She took a slow breath.

"But he never stopped."

David's face turned pale.

Then Elena quietly reached into her purse again.

"I have something else."

She handed the detective a small flash drive.

"I hoped I'd never need this."

David stared at it.

His eyes widened.

"What is that?"

Elena answered calmly.

"My daughter has been sending me recordings every time she became afraid."

Maya looked shocked.

"You kept them?"

"Every single one."

The detective accepted the drive.

"Sir," he said to David, "you're going to remain here while we review this evidence."

For the first time...

David had no response.
