Chapter 2: Every Eye Became a Witness

David stumbled backward as though releasing Maya erased what everyone had just seen.
"It was a misunderstanding," he said quickly, forcing out a laugh. "She overreacted."
No one laughed with him.
The restaurant had become unnaturally quiet.
Phones were no longer hidden beneath tables.
Several diners openly recorded.
The restaurant manager hurried over.
"Sir," he said firmly, "please step away from your wife."
David straightened his expensive suit.
"You don't know who I am."
"I know exactly what I saw."
Rebecca slammed her hand on the table.
"This is a private family disagreement! Everyone needs to mind their own business."
A woman from a nearby table stood.
"No," she replied. "The second he grabbed her by the hair, it stopped being private."
Another voice joined in.
"I saw everything."
"So did we."
Within seconds, half the restaurant had become witnesses.
Maya sat trembling, unable to stop crying.
Elena wrapped her arms around her daughter.
For the first time in years, Maya allowed herself to lean into her mother's embrace.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
Elena kissed the top of her head.
"You have absolutely nothing to apologize for."
The dispatcher remained on speaker.
"Ma'am, officers are approximately three minutes away. Is the suspect still there?"
"Yes," Elena answered.
David suddenly looked nervous.
"Come on," he muttered to Rebecca. "We're leaving."
The manager stepped directly into their path.
"I'm afraid you won't be doing that."
David frowned.
"You can't stop me."
"I can ask you to remain until police arrive."
Rebecca scoffed.
"We'll sue this restaurant."
The manager calmly folded his hands.
"I'll gladly explain to my owners why I prevented an alleged domestic assault suspect from leaving."
David's jaw tightened.
For the first time all evening...
He realized he was losing control.
Then something unexpected happened.
The elderly couple sitting closest to Maya quietly walked over.
The husband removed his suit jacket and draped it around Maya's shoulders.
His wife took Maya's shaking hand.
"I used to be you," she said softly.
The room fell silent again.
"My first husband embarrassed me in public too."
Tears filled Maya's eyes.
"But I stayed," the woman continued. "For twelve years."
She looked directly at David.
"They never stop."
David's face reddened.
"Mind your own business."
"I finally did," the woman replied.
"And that's why I'm alive."
No one spoke after that.
Even Rebecca looked away.

Outside...
The unmistakable sound of sirens echoed through the Boston streets.
