Chapter 8: The Perfect Husband
The news destroyed the image David had spent years creating.
Business partners suspended contracts.
Charities removed his name from their boards.
Former employees began contacting investigators with stories of threats, hidden payments, and violent outbursts.
Still, David refused to confess.
From jail, he claimed William had fabricated the car evidence.
Margaret repeated the accusation publicly.
She hired a crisis management firm and launched a campaign portraying Sarah as a greedy wife attempting to seize the Cole family fortune.
Then David filed for emergency custody of Emma.
The request seemed absurd, but his attorneys argued that he had never harmed the child and that Sarah’s physical condition made her incapable of providing stable care.
Sarah received the documents three days after leaving the hospital.
She sat in William’s guest room with her leg elevated, reading each page until the words blurred.
“He says I turned Emma against him.”
William took the papers.
“He says many things.”
“What if the judge lets him see her?”
“The protective order remains in effect.”
“For now.”
Emma appeared in the doorway holding her stuffed rabbit.
“Is Daddy coming?”
Sarah opened her arms.
Emma climbed carefully onto the bed.
“Not today,” Sarah said.
“Is he mad?”
Sarah exchanged a glance with William.
Children deserved truth, but not burdens they were too young to carry.
“Daddy made choices that were not safe,” Sarah explained. “The police and the judge are making sure everyone stays protected.”
“Grandma Margaret says you tell lies.”
Sarah’s body went still.
“When did she say that?”
“On my tablet.”
William immediately checked the device.
Margaret had created a new account using the name of one of Emma’s preschool friends. She had sent a video message telling the child that Sarah was sick and confused.
At the end of the recording, Margaret said, “You must tell the judge you want to come home to Daddy.”
William handed the tablet to Detective Ruiz.
The attempted contact violated the protective order.
More importantly, it revealed that Margaret was willing to manipulate a frightened four-year-old.
Later that night, Sarah could not sleep.
She opened an old cloud storage account she had not used in years. It contained photographs from before her marriage, college essays, and videos of Emma as a baby.
One folder was labeled HOME INVENTORY.
Sarah had created it for insurance purposes after a break-in in the neighborhood.
As she scrolled through the files, she found a video recorded two years earlier.
The camera had been left running on a shelf.
David and Margaret stood in the background, believing they were alone.
Margaret’s voice was faint but clear.
“You need to control the money before she realizes how much you moved.”
David laughed.
“She signs anything I put in front of her.”
Sarah watched the video twice.
