Chapter 7: What the Car Remembered

The inspection took place in a secured police facility.
Sarah’s damaged car was transported from the warehouse under guard. The exterior still showed the scars of the crash, but the brake system had been protected from weather inside the building.
Dr. Aaron Patel, an independent automotive engineer, examined the vehicle for nearly nine hours.
William waited outside with Officer Ruiz.
Sarah remained at his house with Emma under police protection.
Near sunset, Patel removed his gloves.
“The brake line did not fail naturally,” he said.
Ruiz straightened. “You’re certain?”
“There are tool marks around the fitting. Someone loosened it enough to allow gradual fluid loss. The brakes would have seemed normal at first, then weakened during sustained use.”
“Could the crash have caused those marks?”
“No.”
William looked through the observation window at the crushed vehicle.
“Can you determine when it was done?”
“Not precisely. But it happened before the impact.”
Ruiz contacted the detective assigned to the domestic violence case.
Within an hour, investigators obtained records from the mansion’s garage cameras. Most footage from the week before the crash had been deleted.
One clip remained because it had been accidentally saved to an employee training archive.
The video showed David entering the garage after midnight.
He carried a small tool case.
Forty minutes later, he left without it.
The next morning, a household employee named Carlos Vega placed the case in David’s office.
Carlos had left the Cole mansion shortly after Sarah’s crash. Officially, he had resigned.
William found him living two counties away.
At first, Carlos refused to speak.
Then William showed him a photograph of Sarah on the hospital floor.
Carlos lowered his eyes.
“Mr. Cole told me Mrs. Cole was dangerous,” he said. “He said she drank before driving and might hurt the little girl.”
“Did you believe him?”
“I wanted to. The salary was good. My son needed surgery.”
“What did you see?”
Carlos rubbed both hands over his face.
“The morning before the accident, I found brake fluid beneath Mrs. Cole’s car. I told Mr. Cole. He said he had already scheduled a repair. After the crash, Mrs. Cole asked why the brakes stopped working. Mr. Cole told me never to discuss it.”
“Did Margaret know?”
Carlos looked toward the closed door.
“She knew everything.”
He explained that Margaret had paid him twenty thousand dollars after he left the mansion. The payment came with a confidentiality agreement.
William felt anger rise, but he kept his voice calm.
“Will you testify?”
Carlos shook his head.
“They will ruin me.”
“They may try.”
“My family—”
“Sarah has a family too.”
Carlos stared at the photograph again.
Finally, he nodded.
That night, David was arrested a second time.

This time, the charge was not assault.
It was attempted murder.
