PART 5 — The Wife He Never Pretended About

Six months later...

Chicago looked different.

Or perhaps Ellie did.

Richard Sullivan testified before Congress.

Billions in stolen assets were recovered.

Dozens of executives disappeared into prison.

Daniel Carter's career quietly collapsed after investigators discovered he had accepted money to monitor Ellie's life without ever asking why.

Vanessa stopped calling.

No one mentioned the wedding anymore.

Except strangers online.

They still believed Dante Russo had secretly married.

Ironically...

They were finally right.

...

The ceremony took place at sunset.

No ballroom.

No reporters.

No society guests.

Only family.

Richard walked Ellie down a stone garden path overlooking the lake.

Halfway there...

He smiled.

"I used to imagine this day."

"So did I."

"I always imagined arriving late."

She laughed through tears.

"You've always been terrible with timing."

"I know."

"But I made it."

...

Dante waited beneath white roses.

No expensive speech.

No dramatic promises.

Only honesty.

"When I first asked you to pretend to be my wife..."

He smiled softly.

"...I already knew I wanted forever."

Ellie looked at him.

"When did you know?"

"The moment you asked me not to punish people who hurt you."

She blinked.

"Why?"

"Because only someone truly strong protects kindness after being betrayed."

The minister nodded.

"You may exchange rings."

Dante slid a simple platinum band onto her finger.

No diamonds.

No performance.

Just certainty.

Ellie placed his ring on his hand.

"This one," she whispered, "is given in love."

His forehead rested against hers.

"It always will be."

...

That evening...

As the reception ended...

Richard handed Dante a weathered envelope.

"For your children."

Dante frowned.

"You wrote letters?"

"One for every year I thought I might never meet my grandchildren."

Ellie covered her mouth.

Her father smiled.

"I've spent twenty years missing birthdays."

"I'm not missing theirs."

...

Long after the guests left...

Ellie and Dante stood alone beneath the stars.

The lake reflected the moon like polished silver.

She slipped her hand into his.

"Funny."

"What is?"

"The greatest lie of my life..."

She looked at the man beside her.

"...turned out to be the truest thing that ever happened."

Dante kissed her forehead.

"It stopped being a lie..."

"...the moment you took my hand."

And for the first time in many years, Ellie Sullivan understood that some people enter your life to rescue you from loneliness.

Others arrive to return what the world stole.

May you like

Dante had done both.

The End.
