Chapter 1: The Countdown

The digital thermometer mounted inside the industrial freezer blinked –20°F... then dropped even lower.
Emma Vance watched another cloud of frozen breath drift into the darkness before disappearing. The only light came from the pale glow of her phone, casting sharp shadows across the steel walls surrounding her.
She had expected the cold.
She hadn't expected the pain.
It wasn't the kind that made someone scream. It crept inward—through skin, into muscle, down to the bone—slowly stealing strength one heartbeat at a time.
Her body shook uncontrollably as she pulled her dark wool coat tighter around herself, pressing the silk blouse beneath it against her chest in a desperate attempt to preserve what little warmth remained.
She didn't have hours.
She barely had minutes.
The livestream timer rolled past one minute.
Fifty thousand viewers.
Then seventy thousand.
Then one hundred thousand.
Exactly as she'd planned.
Months earlier, Emma had secretly built an encrypted broadcasting network that couldn't be blocked or traced. More importantly, the stream had been mirrored directly to the inboxes of Victor Vance's largest investors, regulators, and financial partners.
There would be no deleting this.
No silencing it.
Across Manhattan, Victor relaxed in the backseat of his chauffeur-driven Maybach, swirling a glass of thirty-year-old Scotch with quiet satisfaction.
Everything had gone according to plan.
By sunrise, his wife would simply...
disappear.
He unlocked his phone, expecting another surge in Vance Pharmaceuticals' stock price.
Instead...
a crimson notification stretched across the screen.
Then another.
Then dozens more.
His smile disappeared.
Back inside the freezer, Emma's lips had turned a frightening shade of blue.
She looked directly into the camera.
Despite the violent shaking in her body, her voice never broke.
"If you're watching this..."
she whispered,
"...the evidence has already reached the SEC."
A slow breath escaped her frozen lips.
"Victor Vance isn't a visionary."
"He's a fraud."
May you like
"And tonight..."
"He tried to murder his wife."
