Chapter 3: The Secret Patient

Richard laughed once.

Cold.

Disbelieving.

“That’s impossible.”

The nurse’s face changed.

Not with surprise.

With pain.

Richard noticed.

“Emily?”

She looked down.

The old man’s weak voice came from the room.

“Bring her in.”

Richard stepped aside as the nurse walked slowly back to the bed.

His father reached for her hand.

She took it gently.

Richard stared at them.

“What is going on?”

The old man breathed with difficulty.

“Before your mother… there was someone else.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

His father closed his eyes.

“I had a daughter.”

The words hit the room like a dropped blade.

Richard looked at Emily.

She did not speak.

The old man continued.

“I was young. Cowardly. Her mother raised her alone. I sent money, but I never gave her my name.”

Emily’s eyes filled with tears, but her voice stayed controlled.

“I didn’t come here for money.”

The old man squeezed her hand.

“She came here because I was dying.”

Richard stepped back, shaken.

David suddenly laughed bitterly from the doorway, held by security.

“And he was going to reward her with everything.”

The old man turned his head.

“No. I was going to correct what I broke.”

Richard’s breathing changed.

For the first time, he truly looked at Emily.

The nurse he had accused.

The woman he had tried to fire.

The woman who had just saved his father’s life.

His sister.

David’s face twisted.

“I gave that family twenty years.”

Richard turned on him.

May you like

“And you almost killed my father for a chair at a board table.”

David’s silence answered for him.
