Chapter 15 - A Mother’s Final Lie
Esther denied it immediately.
Marcela insisted.
Camila separated them.
Hours of questioning followed.
Marcela claimed she told Esther about the sabotaged brakes before Ricardo left the mansion.
Esther could have stopped him.
She did not.
Esther called it a lie designed to reduce Marcela’s own guilt.
Investigators searched for evidence.
They found it in an unlikely place.
Inés.
She remembered hearing Esther and Marcela arguing in the downstairs study the night Ricardo died.
At the time, she did not understand the conversation.
Now she did.
“Fix it before he leaves.”
Esther had said.
Marcela replied.
“It’s too late.”
Inés heard Esther say.
“Then call Víctor.”
Phone records confirmed Esther called Salcedo seventeen minutes before Ricardo’s crash.
That looked terrible.
But when Camila obtained Salcedo’s old billing notes, another detail appeared.

Camila looked at Alejandro.
“This may support your mother.”
Alejandro felt strangely relieved.
Not because Esther was innocent.
She was not.
She had covered up crimes.
Destroyed evidence.
Helped smear Valeria.
Protected Marcela repeatedly.
But she might not have allowed Ricardo to die.
Salcedo was finally arrested at a private airfield outside Cancún.
He had false travel documents and nearly half a million dollars in cash.
Faced with overwhelming evidence, he negotiated.
His testimony clarified the final hours before Ricardo’s death.
Esther had learned Marcela tampered with the SUV.
She ordered Salcedo to stop Ricardo.
Salcedo called Marcela.
Marcela lied.
She said the vehicle had already been repaired.
Salcedo believed her.
After the crash, Marcela confessed the truth to him.
Instead of going to police, Salcedo chose protection.
He destroyed evidence.
Esther learned the full truth two days later.
She had a choice.
Turn in her daughter.
Or bury what happened.
She chose Marcela.
Alejandro confronted his mother one final time.
“You knew she killed Dad.”
Esther cried.
“Yes.”
“And you protected her.”
“She was my daughter.”
“So was your responsibility.”
Esther looked at him.
“I had already lost my husband.”
“I could not lose my child too.”
Alejandro’s voice broke.
“So you let me spend seven years believing Dad died because of rain.”
Esther could not answer.
Valeria stood beside him.
Esther looked at her.
“And then when I became inconvenient, you started doing the same thing to me.”
Esther shook her head.
“I never wanted you harmed.”
Valeria’s reply was quiet.
“That is the problem with people who protect monsters.”
