Chapter 1 - What Was Under the Blanket

Alejandro did not see another man.

He did not see a hidden phone, a second set of clothes, or anything that could justify the accusation burning in his mind.

He saw bruises.

Dark purple bruises covered Valeria’s left hip and stretched across the side of her thigh.

There were smaller marks around her wrist, shaped almost perfectly like fingers.

A wide medical support band had been wrapped around the lower part of her abdomen.

Near the edge of the sheet was a small rust-colored stain.

Alejandro stopped breathing.

His anger vanished so quickly that it left him dizzy.

“What happened to you?”

Valeria immediately pulled the blanket back over herself.

Her face burned with humiliation.

“I told you not to do that.”

Alejandro stared at her wrist.

“Who touched you?”

She looked away.

“Valeria.”

His voice changed.

The businessman who could intimidate a room full of executives was gone.

Now there was only a husband staring at evidence that someone had hurt his pregnant wife inside his own home.

“Who did this?”

Valeria’s eyes filled with tears.

“If I tell you, you won’t believe me.”

“Try me.”

She gave a bitter laugh.

“I’ve been trying for two years.”

The words struck harder than he expected.

Alejandro sat on the edge of the bed.

Valeria moved away from him.

That small movement hurt him more than any accusation.

“Was it the man in the photograph?”

he asked.

Valeria slowly looked at him.

“No.”

“Then who was he?”

“My doctor.”

Alejandro frowned.

“Dr. Beltrán?”

Valeria nodded.

“Tomás came here because I was afraid to go downstairs.”

Alejandro stared at her.

“Why would you be afraid to go downstairs?”

She hesitated.

Then her hand moved protectively over her belly.

“Because three nights ago, your sister shoved me against the service staircase.”

Alejandro stood so quickly the bedside table shook.

“No.”

Valeria closed her eyes.

There it was.

That single word.

The same word he had used every time she tried to tell him something about Marcela or Esther.

No.

Not my family.

Not my sister.

Not my mother.

Valeria turned her face toward the window.

“You asked.”

Alejandro swallowed.

“I didn’t mean I don’t believe you.”

“But you said it before you even thought.”

He had no defense.

Valeria continued.

“I didn’t fall all the way down.”

“I caught the railing.”

“But I hit the wall hard enough that I started cramping.”

Alejandro went pale.

“The baby?”

“Tomás says the baby is stable.”

“For now.”

Alejandro stared at the medical band.

“Why didn’t you call me?”

“I did.”

“When?”

“Three times.”

“I never got those calls.”

“I know.”

That answer changed something in the room.

Alejandro slowly lowered his phone.

“What do you mean, you know?”

Valeria looked directly into his eyes.

“Because someone has been deleting my calls from the house system.”

Alejandro’s face hardened.

Valeria reached beneath her pillow.

She removed a tiny memory card sealed inside a plastic bag.

“That isn’t the worst part.”

Alejandro stared at it.

“What is that?”

“The reason Marcela pushed me.”

He did not move.

Valeria’s voice dropped to a whisper.

“I found something beneath this house.”

“Something your family has been hiding for years.”
