Chapter 8 - THE FILE THOMAS LEFT BEHIND
Thomas had worked as a cybersecurity consultant.
He helped the Whitmore Hotel upgrade its payment systems.
My family disliked him.
Not because he lacked money.
Thomas earned well.
They disliked him because he asked questions.
He never accepted Preston’s charm as evidence of competence.
He never laughed when Lorraine insulted me.
He never believed family loyalty required silence.
Two weeks before his death, Thomas told me someone was moving hotel money through fake renovation vendors.
I asked whether Preston was involved.
Thomas answered:
“I do not know yet.”
I told him to be careful.
He smiled.
“Careful is not the same as quiet.”
The sentence returned to me as Detective Bennett reopened his accident file.
Thomas’s car had been examined after the crash.
The report noted possible electronic steering failure.
A second report dismissed it.
The second report was signed by an outside consultant.
Eric Vaughn.
The current Whitmore finance director.
He was not an automotive engineer.
He had no reason to inspect the vehicle.
Yet he authorized its destruction.
Thomas’s work laptop disappeared after the crash.
My father told me police kept it.
Police records showed Charles collected the device.
Detective Bennett obtained a warrant for the hotel’s private archive.
Owen led us into a climate-controlled room beneath the executive offices.
Boxes from old audits lined the shelves.
Thomas’s name appeared on one sealed carton.
My father had stored his laptop inside the hotel for four years.
The device was encrypted.
Rachel remembered a phrase Thomas used as a password clue.
The first place Evelyn said no.
I tried childhood addresses.
Schools.
Restaurants.
Then I entered the name of a small neighborhood library.
I had met Thomas there after refusing to attend Preston’s engagement party.
The laptop unlocked.
Inside was a folder called WHITE MENU.
The same words printed across the board Preston used to strike Sophie.
The folder contained vendor records.
Preston had created seven shell companies.
Charles approved invoices.
Lorraine’s foundation received donations from the companies.
Eric moved the money.
More than twenty-eight million dollars had disappeared.
Thomas had also found unauthorized loans secured against hotel property.
The current refinancing was not intended to finish the new tower.
It was intended to repay hidden debt before the lender discovered fraud.
A video file showed Thomas sitting inside his car on the night he died.
“If anything happens to me, Preston knows I found the transfers.”
“Charles knows the hotel cannot survive an independent audit.”
“And Eric has access to the vehicle system through the executive garage.”
Thomas looked directly into the camera.
“Evelyn, do not let them make you doubt what you see.”
The video ended at 10:11 p.m.
Traffic footage showed his car leaving the hotel at 10:18.
Eric Vaughn accessed the garage-control system at 10:19.
Thomas crashed twenty-three minutes later.
The car’s remote steering system received an update from the hotel network.
Detective Bennett issued warrants.
Eric did not arrive at work.
His apartment was empty.
His phone signal ended near O’Hare Airport.
Charles had warned someone after our call.
The investigation shifted from fraud to possible murder.
Then Owen found another file.
Thomas had copied the hotel’s old wedding-camera policy.
The ballroom system saved audio separately for insurance purposes.
Preston knew the video camera existed.
He did not know the microphones remained active even when the room appeared dark.
The microphone had recorded my parents speaking after the ambulance left.
Charles said:
“If Evelyn finds Thomas’s file, this is over.”
