Chapter 13 - THE WATCH SOPHIE NEVER REMOVED
Three weeks after the wedding, Sophie asked for her denim jacket.
Police still held it as evidence.
She explained that her smartwatch had been inside the inner sleeve.
The device automatically recorded voice notes when she pressed the side button twice.
Sophie had been practicing a wedding message for Preston.
She wanted to tell him she hoped he and Vanessa stayed happy forever.
She activated the recording near the coatroom.
Then she forgot to stop it.
The watch captured almost eighteen minutes.
The audio began with Sophie whispering her message.
Then footsteps approached.
Preston and Lorraine entered the hallway before the wedding guests arrived.
My brother spoke first.
“Put the phone in the left pocket.”
My mother asked:
“Why not her bag?”
“Evelyn might search the bag first.”
“She will believe the jacket.”
Lorraine whispered:
“What if Sophie says she saw you?”
Preston laughed.
“She is eight.”
“People believe adults.”
My hands began shaking as I listened.
Then Charles joined them.
He said:
“The accusation needs to happen after the lenders enter.”
“Make sure Evelyn refuses to apologize.”
Preston answered:
“She always defends the kid.”
My father said:
“Then provoke her.”
“We need witnesses who will say she became unstable.”
Lorraine asked:
“And if she leaves?”
“The vote continues.”
“What if she stays?”
Preston said:
“I’ll make the room choose.”
The watch captured the phone entering the jacket.
It captured Lorraine taking the photograph used to unlock it.
Then Preston said something worse.
“After the trust changes, Sophie can go to boarding school.”
My mother answered:
“Evelyn will never agree.”
“She won’t be trustee.”
“And the child?”
Preston’s voice became cold.
“She will learn what happens when people stand in my way.”
The recording ended when Sophie returned for her jacket.
She saw the adults leave through another door.
She did not see the phone.
But the watch heard everything.
Detective Bennett added the recording to the evidence.
It proved intent.
The phone was not a prank.
Not a last-minute decision.
It was part of a plan to remove me and control Sophie.
Sophie listened only to the first few minutes.
I stopped before Preston’s boarding-school comment.
Her therapist agreed she did not need every detail yet.
The law could preserve truth without forcing a child to carry all of it immediately.
The watch recording also captured another voice in the hallway.
Judge Harold Cole.
Vanessa’s father.
He asked whether the forged temporary-trust document would survive review.
Charles answered:
“It only needs to last until the collateral transfers.”
Judge Cole said:
“Then keep Evelyn away from an independent lawyer until morning.”
The state judicial commission suspended him.
Federal prosecutors opened a bribery investigation.
Vanessa’s cooperation expanded.
She admitted her father expected a hotel partnership in exchange for notarizing documents and steering legal proceedings.
The wedding joined two families exactly as Preston promised.
