Chapter 7 - THE PRESS CONFERENCE
Preston’s attorneys held a press conference outside the Whitmore Hotel.
They expected the footage to remain private.
Hotel counsel changed that.
Because Preston publicly accused Sophie of theft, the family trust authorized release of a limited security sequence to correct the false allegation.
The video showed Preston removing his phone from the head table.
It showed my mother holding Sophie’s jacket open.
It showed Preston sliding the phone into the pocket.
Then it showed him announcing the theft and walking directly toward Sophie.
The final released section showed the board rising and striking her.
There was no sound during the assault.
The image was enough.
The press conference collapsed.
Reporters shouted questions.
Preston’s attorney ended the event after four minutes.
By noon, the video had spread nationwide.
People identified my parents standing nearby.
They saw my mother’s folded arms.
They saw my father adjust his cuff links while Sophie bled.
The hotel group’s board placed all three on emergency suspension.
Preston remained the chief executive in title only.
My father lost his seat as chairman.
My mother was removed from the family foundation.
Employees began speaking.
A housekeeper described Preston throwing a glass near her face.
A valet said he had been fired after refusing to hide damage from Preston’s drunk driving.
A banquet coordinator said my mother demanded staff clock out before continuing to work.
My family called the accusations opportunistic.
Then payroll records supported them.
Grandmother had not changed the trust because of one concern.
She had been collecting evidence for years.
The Boston attorney delivered a sealed archive to the independent trustee.
It contained emails, recordings, audits, and witness statements.
One recording captured my father warning Grandmother that exposing Preston would embarrass the family.
She answered, “The embarrassment is the conduct, not the truth.”
I listened to her voice in the hospital hallway.
She had understood what I learned too late.
Family loyalty without accountability becomes a shield for the cruelest person in the room.
Preston was arrested that afternoon.
The charges initially included aggravated battery of a child, evidence tampering, and filing a false report.
When officers placed him in the police car, he looked directly at the cameras.
He continued insisting Sophie had stolen the phone.
Then Detective Miles released a detail the public had not noticed.
The phone found in Sophie’s jacket was not Preston’s active phone.
It was a duplicate device purchased two days before the wedding.
