Chapter 3 - THE FRACTURE

The fracture was small and did not require surgery.

Sophie needed twelve stitches and overnight neurological observation.

The doctor warned that she might experience headaches, dizziness, and fear for weeks.

“She was very lucky,” he said.

I did not feel lucky.

Lucky children were not struck at weddings.

Lucky mothers were not told to leave while their daughters bled.

Detective Miles photographed the injuries with my permission.

A child-welfare specialist named Dr. Miriam Shaw sat beside Sophie and asked gentle questions.

Sophie remembered Preston accusing her.

She remembered the board rising.

Then she remembered the floor coming toward her.

“Did you take the phone?” Miriam asked.

“No.”

“Did you see anyone put it in your jacket?”

Sophie’s eyes moved toward me.

“Uncle Preston touched my coat.”

“When?”

“After I saw him with Aunt Paige.”

Miriam kept her voice neutral.

“What did you see?”

“He kissed her near the gold elevator.”

“Grandma saw.”

“Uncle Preston said I was confused.”

“He said if I told Cassandra, everyone would know I was a liar.”

Tears moved down Sophie’s cheeks.

“I was going to tell Mommy.”

“You did the right thing,” I said.

“No.”

“He hurt me.”

“That was his choice.”

“Not yours.”

A knock came at the door.

My parents entered without waiting.

My mother carried a bouquet of white roses.

My father held a stuffed bear from the hospital gift shop.

Sophie turned her face toward the wall.

My mother sighed.

“Evelyn, we need to speak privately.”

“No.”

“This is not the place.”

“My daughter is in the hospital because your son attacked her.”

“Lower your voice.”

“You have spent my entire life telling me to lower my voice.”

“I am done.”

My father placed the bear on a chair.

“Preston’s attorney says the video could be misunderstood.”

“The video shows him planting the phone.”

“It shows him touching a jacket.”

“It shows him raising the board.”

My mother’s face hardened.

“Cassandra’s family is threatening to cancel the marriage.”

“They should.”

“The ceremony already happened.”

“Then she should annul it.”

My father looked toward Sophie.

“Your daughter saw something she did not understand.”

Sophie began trembling.

I stood between them and the bed.

“She understood perfectly.”

“Preston was kissing Paige.”

“Mother watched.”

My mother’s mouth went dry.

“That is a disgusting accusation.”

“Then tell me why you followed Preston into the service hallway.”

She said nothing.

Detective Miles appeared behind them.

“Mrs. Whitmore, we need to discuss exactly that.”

My parents turned.

He continued.

“The hallway camera shows you watching Preston and Paige.”

“It also shows you noticing Sophie.”

“You walked toward her.”

“What did you say?”

My mother’s expression changed.

“I told her not to wander.”

Detective Miles opened his folder.

“The camera has audio.”

“You told her, ‘Good girls protect their families.’”

Then he looked at my father.

May you like

“And you arrived thirty seconds later.”

“You told Preston, ‘Deal with the child before Cassandra hears anything.’”
